Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - The wife ok'ed a new road bike.

The bike shop near the house is clearing all their 2010 bikes. They have a Trek 1.2 that the salesman had me drooling over. Talking with my wife, she agree I should put it in lay-away. I'm geeked! :D

My wife doesn't ride but she always notifies me of the LBS having a sale and fully supports my hobby. If you look at my bike link, she hasn't complained about them yet.

Congrats. My wife is definitely supportive, and a sometimes cyclist herself, but purchases like bikes come from our individual funds, and not the household account. So while "we" could probably swing a new road bike for me, "I" can't.

My wife also supports our bike riding and never has an objection to the N+1 habit.
She believes that bike riding is keeping us healthy.

She's very supportive of my "habit". I got her to do her first organized ride in November ("Bike through the Lights"). Now she's talking about doing another ride. I think I've got her hooked too, so that helps.

I had been riding my old 1980 Raleigh road bike, with a few modernizations such as a clipless pedals, and my wife encouraged me to go look at new road bikes before last Christmas (2009). I was trying to decide between Trek 2.3 and a similarly-priced Specialized, and then stopped in at a local shop to check out a Scott Speedster. My wife (who does not ride) really liked the appearance of a Scott CR1 that was prominently displayed at the front of the shop, largely due to it's mostly-white frame. So she was the one who talked me into upscoping myself into a very nice carbon frame! Thank you, honey!

As it turns out, she was also the one who got me converted from skiing to snowboarding some years ago, by surprising me with a snowboard for Christmas. I had mentioned that I'd wanted to try snowboarding, and the next thing I knew, I was committed!

This bike is to replace the 1989 Raleigh Technium that I bought at a yard sale. I love that bike because I completed my first century on it after learning how to fix it up. It's a good bike, but I really want a stepped up ride. My wife rides a Cannondale, so she gets the whole "you get what you pay for" line.

Winter is a time we always end up buying bikes because we can't ride except in the basement. Enjoy your new bike, it sounds great!!!! I am hoping the snow melts soon so we can get back on the road here in Michigan. By the way, is the LBS you used Jack's in Dearborn? We love their customer service and overall attitude...a great place to buy a bike.

Jacks was the shop where I found the first bike in the OP, but I went to a shop in Allen Park. I liked Jacks, but this shop was the one I went to for years (until a shop opened in my neighborhood / now closed). I will probably go to Jacks to get the bike fitted for me later this summer if I can't get it right myself.

BTW pinsonp2 - I see you're in Taylor? Where abouts? I grew up in Taylor. Always looking for ride partners.

I'm building my wife up slowly to the idea of a new bike for me. Very slowly.

I've planted the idea of a "weight loss goal reward" and gone as far as to mention a model name or 2. I also like to point out bikes on the road, especially REALLY expensive ones, to reinforce the idea of "See? THAT'S an expensive bike! I don't even want anything like that" with an anchor-and-adjust tactic. "See honey, it's the $5000 bike that's expensive, $2000 isn't bad at all!" I'm also slowly bringing up little things about how my current bike is holding my back in little ways. Nothing major, but the seed is planted.

I'm aiming to have a green light for next Christmas, which matches my weight loss goals just about perfectly. If everything goes according to plan, I've got about a month or 2 of leeway to get to goal weight before Christmas. And I'll have over 4000 miles and multiple organized centuries on my current bike, so I'll have some great arguments to drive home the deal on how I NEED a better bike to be able to reach my next set of goals. Add in the inevitable end-of-year sales on 2011 models after the 2012s are out, and it's a deal!

We are just west of Telegraph and north of Goddard. We have had service done at Roll Models in AP, but never purchased a bike there. There is a Downriver Cycling Club that may be of interest to you. Several types of rides (all no drop) and great people. Their web site is http://www.lmb.org/dcc/. They are opening up a new phase to the downriver green way that should connect Lake Erie MP to Oakwoods, Willow and Lower Huron MP. You might try that when the weather clears.

So, it's a done deal. A 2010 Giant Defy 2 from Roll Models in Allen Park. I got a great deal too! MSRP: $1100. My cost $750. Now I've just got to make payments for about ~90 days.

You guys have to get your wives riding. It is not N+1 it is N+2. Beanz knows. That $750 is now $1500 but the time with your partners is worth it. I just got a new bike last night it was BO. Wife got the same bike a couple of weeks ago.
