Classic & Vintage - Gios Pro Compact I just bought

I've been on the lookout for an SLX frame with full Campagnolo for a while for a reasonable price and I found it tonight.

Late 80's Gios Pro Compact. Chorus group. Nice looking frame and gruppo seems to be in good condish. I have no patience and not a huge amount of luck with cheap finds. I'm pretty sure I paid more then most of you would. I'm excited about this bike though and looking forward to riding it. It'll be a nice companion for my Battaglin and another Selle Italia! Yay!

Nice! I love the colour!

I had one of these - a 1994 model - while in London. Best-climbing bike I ever owned, due to the fact I could insanely shorten the wheelbase. And there's some really great climbing to be had in and around London.

I took this bike on the London-to-Cambridge ride in 1995. Flawless. Solid as a rock as a descender, too.

You're going to love the way this feels if it's anything like the one I had.

BTW, is the underside of the fork crown open, or is it flush? Mine was flush where you'd normally expect to see the hole going up into the steerer. I often wondered if that had something to do with the stiffness/stability I encountered.

I especially like the color of yours! Not many around that didn't get white, red or classic cobalt-blue.

For the entire bike, plus shipping? Assuming shipping came to about a hundred, nah. Sounds like you did pretty well. Heck, it would cost more than that to build it up piece by piece. And you have a very nice gruppo there, make no mistake about that.

Anyways, as we all know, value/cost is a relative thing around here :)

seems like a good price for an auction and with shipping included...obviously Mr Jag doesn't do a lot of handlebar taping for himself (probably he usually has somebody to do that for him, but it was the butler's day off). I think it DOES have the slightly flattened fork blades, but maybe there were some even flatter than this on some later Gios (don't know). I'm sure you're gonna need to take this up some Washington mountains and see how it climbs!

Very cool, encouraging to hear that my eagerness was kept moderately in check. I opted for the larger of the two cassettes - up to a 21T (not quite the 31T that's on my Battaglin, but that's a different story)

Anyone know of the differences between this bike and the Nuovo Compact? To my eyes they look identical minus the 'Alberto Gios' vs 'Gios' headbadge.

Four years and 10 bikes later, I still love riding it. Very quick steering to the point that I don't like riding no handed but so much fun. You will love it.

I'm partial to Turbos, so I'll check the condition first. The bar tape also looks okay, so I'll probably just set the bars up how i like them and reuse it. - We'll see. The cleaning/greasing part should be fun though!

I haven't been able to find another in this colour either. I'm encouraged by all the positive feed-back - I'm excited to see how this bad-boy rides. I don't have much to compare it too (yet!)

It arrived today! I just got home and was going to go to bed and unbox in the AM, but the wife was already asleep, so I thought, why the hell not.

It's gorgeous! Exactly the bike I've been waiting & looking for. Needs a clean, but everything, so far, looks good. The gentleman also offered a choice of 2 stems, a 110 or a 95. I asked for the 95 and he threw in both, so now I have an extra Cinelli stem for my Medici build - fantastic!

It also has tubulars, which is a first for me. Makes me a tad nervous - never ridden, let alone maintained/switcheroo'd - Luckily the tires are in great shape, so I won't have to for a while. Oh my gosh I'm so excited! I'll post more & better pics when I've given it a wipe down and the lighting is better.

Looks like an excellent ride! With all the buzz about how well they climb, I'm intrigued (Though, one would be hard pressed to find a better climbing steel bike than my Peloton). I had a Chorus group on my Colnago, and was impressed. I'd recommend getting an eight speed wheel for the back. I had one on mine, and really liked the versatility of the 8s with C-Record retrofriction shifters.

Tore the bad boy apart, gave the frame a wipe down - has small bubbles of surface rust here and there, but nothing too bad. I haven't decided what to do with those areas yet. (suggestions would be appreciated.) The paint job is gorgeous; the paint sparkles and glitters. I'm impressed.

Rebuilt the headset, cleaned the brakes, FD & RD and mounted them. I also found out the front wheel cones were super loose, I'm hoping the SR hubs are okay. Will rebuild in a few days.
