The first ones that come to mind for me are Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, Lolita, The Road, True Grit, and No Country for Old Men.

Dying Young - read the book before the movie and enjoyed both.
Jurassic Park - loved the book more but the movie was not bad.
LOTR + 1
Some good ones here, Cuckoo's Nest, True Grit...yes!
Here's one, Sherman Alexie's "Tonto and the Lone Ranger Fist Fight in Heaven" became the movie "Smoke Signals". I love both the book and the movie!
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
I liked Naked Lunch even though it was about writing the book not
a movie of the book. weird.
lolita as a movie was okay, the book was brilliant.
and very much liked Zachariah, an adaptation of Siddhartha by Hesse.
Battlefield Earth.
Oh wait... favorite.
nevermind.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (and am looking forward to The Rum Diaries).
Fletch (the movie was based loosely on the book, but it's still a classic)

My all time favorite book is Lord of the Rings and in IMHO the film is fantastic.
I have to agree with the stunning interpretation of the LOTR. In fact I'm going to watch it again tonight. :D

Ill +1 for the road - way under rated and under advertised. I love the space odyssey series by Arthur C Clarke, but they only made 2001, and 2010 in film.
One of my favorites is "The Legend Of 1900 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_1900)". Just amazing.
