I'm still holding out for a nice quadrant shifter for my Sturmey Archer hub, but while I wait I would like to know if it's possible to use a regular Campa DT shifter. Anyone out there who has experience with this setup? I tried to find the cable throw on Tony Hadland's site, but either I'm stupid or it's just unfindable? Thanks in advance!

ps. If you have a spare quadrant shifter, let me know!

You can find, by searching the forums, a post by the late Sheldon Brown describing how to use a downtube shifter for an AW hub. I haven't done it, but as I recall his advice was that you set it up so when the shifter is all the way forward, for high gear, it is slightly slack. For first gear you have to pull the lever back as far as it will go; the trick is to learn where 2nd is. You do this with the bike in the shop stand, experimenting and looking in at the indicator chain. Learn and memorize the correct position for 2nd gear, and you're good to go.

thanks! I'll think I go with this route until that damn internet seller responds to my bid on his quadrant shifter:) I think it's a damn shame these fine shifters aren't made anymore. Maybe I should make one myself out of carbon fiber with my initials/some cool sign on it to make it a really modern-retro bike.
