Classic & Vintage - Will a Huret Duopar work with an 8-speed cassette?

Does anyone know if a Huret Duopar has enough lateral range to work with a modern 8-speed 12-32T cassette?

i'd think it would. I'm currently shifting a 9 sp 34T cassette with a suntour accushift. Not sure how well it will shift, but I'm sure it has enough movement.

Just yesterday I replaced the Campag Rally (1st gen) on my 5-speed (14~28) Peugeot with a Duopar Eco and, apart from it being a complete REVELATION about how fantastically well an RD can ACTUALLY shift, and the shame it puts the Rally to, I found I had to screw the inner limiting screw in almost all the way, with around 7mm of thread showing, while the outer limiting screw still has about 1mm of thread showing. Based on this, and the fact that the cogs on an 8-speed are closer together than on a 5-speed, I would be very surprised if the Duopar didn't have the range you are hoping for.

You probably know the Duopar but riding the Peugeot yesterday I was completely in awe and thrilled. What a fantastic derailleur! I've been thinking of starting my own thread about my experience as I'm convinced that anyone looking for a vintage friction RD for touring should get one.

Huh. I've got one that I've been wondering what to do with. Can't remember if it has the tabbed washer that makes it work problem-free, though. If it does I might try it on Loose Change instead of the Sachs Quarz that's on there now. By the bye, that is a completely Shimano-free bike; just wanted to do it to do it, ya know?

I don't know the Quartz but I can't imagine the Duopar being worse. It's certainly the best vintage RD I've ever used.

The tab can be a problem. The one on my Peugeot came with the tab positioned on the RD for a French dropout. The has RD has 2 male tongues cast into it that key into 2 gaps on the tab at 12 and 6 o'clock. I had to file 2 new gaps at 2 and 8 o'clock in the tab so as to angle the derailleur properly from the Campag dropout on the Peugeot. I presume Duopars destined for the US or UK (and Japan, which is generally British) have tabs with gaps to suit.

I've used Duopars with the correct (non-French) tabs on maybe a half-dozen 7-speed setups, but not a 9-speed. The lateral swing for a 9 or 10 is definitely larger than for a 7. The vertical travel will not be an issue, I've used them with rear cogs up to 34 teeth. I could only say, to try it. I think whether any other rear mech will handle your 9-speed is irrelevant.

Anton, I also had no trouble using it on a 7 speed, and IIRC, the limit screws were still turned in some. Best of luck.
