Gawd I hate the thought of cutting my hair in the cold weather. Seems that's the only thing we've had lately. Am I the only one that hates a trim in the cold weather?

I hate it but my hair is getting so long lately that no matter what I try, it still looks shaggy!:D

When I ride bikes, I have to keep my hair short. Like, 'give me a #4 on the top and #2 on the sides' kind of short. Otherwise, it just looks like crap when I'm not actually wearing a helmet. Just can't do a thing with it.

I shave mine bald year around - with the exception of hunting season when I let it grow out a little bit so my hat doesn't slide off :)

Nope; I'm hair-o-dynamic all year round! I have a ponytail to the middle of my back and have had one for MANY years.

I need one too. It's getting in my eyes and it probably looks like trailer trash. But dammit, I NEED my winter coat! It's even colder up here, especially at night.

I have perpetual hat head from November until March, and I usually will only get a trim, just before Christmas. Otherwise I leave it long, in the winter, and have it short in the summer. Your in SoCal, you don't get cold, it's -10℃ (14℉) here today, supposed to be above freezing around the end of the week, then back cold again Sunday and then start slowly heading up again, I think winter is pretty much done...

+1, though there's less and less to shave every year... I usually wear a bandanna under my helmet. Keeps me warm when it's cool, plus keeps the sweat from rolling in my eyes.

I got a buzz right before Christmas and haven't cut it since. I got pretty cold here so I had to wear a hat (I don't normally wear one) most of the cold part of winter.

I went with a buzz cut when I started bike touring. It's easier to keep very short hair clean when on tour. And since I look marginally better with short hair, I've decided to keep it buzzed all year long.

One word Beanz...clippers:p I have been cutting my own hair since 1992. One day immediately after watching Pink Floyd's The Wall I cut off my pony tail and shaved my head...guess I was inspired:twitchy: Haven't had much hair since.

I spent 20 years with short hair, or at least people telling me to get a haircut. I cut it when I want. But it is getting close to warm weather might need to trim it a bit... Yes, drives my wife nuts...

Haha, I've had clippers since about 94. Give me a #1 guard and two mirrors, and all set :) Hair place used to do it once a week for five bux for five minutes. Boss must've told em to start charging me full price, so the second time I paid twelve bux I went and bought my own clippers. At one point I needed a cut and didn't have time so went to a different place. Girl messed the height above my ears up, but she rubbed her boobs on my neck so nice I went back once more. She messed em up the same that time, so boobs or no boobs, I've been back cutting my own hair ever since!

I usually get mine cut every 3-4 weeks except in the winter. I'll cut it early Dec, then not until Feb. When I was younger I wore it long. I cut it when I was 15 years old, then didn't cut it again till I was 22.

My Mom was a hairdresser and cut my hair my entire life. I got it cut once a month. Then, in August of 2005 she was diagnosed with MS. The pain caught up to her and I couldn't handle her shaking when she cut my hair. She would have been devastated if I went somewhere else... so, I let it grow for a little over a year.

After hearing about it from some of the middle managers at work, I decided to have her buzz it. Then, a week later I shaved it all off. Kept it that way for almost a year. Then, she told me she was finished cutting hair. I grew it back.

Now, I hate going to get it cut. Takes too much time...

Bummer to hear about Mom BA! My daughter cuts my hair but moved 45 minutes away so it's a little harder to make appointments. But I'd rather pay her $20 than give $12 to the butcher next door.:p She'd do it for free but I insist. ;)

Ahhh much better now!

Believe it or not, I also cut my own hair with clippers. I've got a #12 attachment, which is the longest one available. It gives a 1 1/2" cut. Two mirrors and running the clippers all over my head a bunch of times to make it even still gives me a better result than the cuts I had to pay for in shops years ago. It's great for warmer weather, and I don't even have to comb it.

I don't mind trims, but then when the hair is half-way down one's back, what's a few inches? I can't bring myself to even attempt a short cut. Yes, hair grows, but mine seems to grow slowly and I'm not patient enough to wait 3 years to get rid of a cut I hate. :P

Exactly the cut I get. Sometimes I'll try to let it grow out in the winter, but it usually drives me so nuts that I'm back to the short cut by January.

I don't have much of a hair style per say... but I've been told it is somewhat similar to a female Justin Bieber (which really is just a 2011 version of a Bobby Sherman).

In warmer months (especially in the 90's or higher) I often throw the helmet on while the hair is still damp. My first glimpse in the mirror - which is often hours into my work shift - I am still surprised the find the various crimped and creased stylings my helmet has created. :thumb: Looks super cool. not.

I keep thinking I may start a trend.... but so far no one has followed.... ;)

I use a #2 (1/4") year round.. unless I get tired of long hair :D then I got to the #1 (1/8"), but my wife doesn't like that.

She cuts it for me sometimes, but mostly I just do it in about 10 minutes every few weeks.

Folks who use clippers, what brands do you use? I see all kinds of cheap clippers in drugstores, but I've stayed away from them. Do those work, or did you purchase a 'professional' model?

+1

as long as you can adjust the blade, you should be good to go.
i've been shaving my head for a long time (late 80s), and never really gave it much thought. i think i've had 3 or 4 clippers in that time period.
if you use a guard or whatever they're called, like a #2 or #3, make multiple passes over the same area at different angles/directions. sometimes those guards can cause it to look like you have grooves in your hair. i cut my sons hair in the summer and have this issue when i first start, but going multiple directions smooths it out.
since i don't use the #'d guards, it takes me 2-5 minutes, tops, to shave my entire head. most of it just going over some spots repeatedly on the back of my head to make sure i didn't miss anything, and then tightening up around the ear in case of a stray long one sticking out.
sucks to be on a plane (or out anywhere), you reach back and feel a strip of hair you missed... i was flying to Germany and felt a little strip of hair on the back of my head, surely the people behind me got a chuckle.

I use 2 mirrors for that reason. I use the bathroom mirror first to go all around my head multiple times, then I look at the back of my head with the handheld mirror and the bathroom mirror. Works great:)

I cut my stepsons hair using a Wahl with the #2 attachment. I think he paid about $15 for the whole set. Paid for itself after the second haircut. My wife used it to cut my hair once. I was happy with the results, but she wasn't, and she swore she'd never do it again, and would pay for my future haircuts. Since we have a joint account, I'm not sure how that works.

My wife cuts my and our sons' hair. Clippers are a great investment. If you like it longer, you can buy larger attachments. Most sets come with the #8 as the largest; you can get a #10 or a #12 at the Wahl web site. Quick tip: The numbers each represent 1/8". So a #2 is 1/4", a #8 is 1", and a #12 is 1 1/2".

1 1/2" is plenty long on top. In fact, I moved to a #10 on top, and #4 - #6 on the sides. That was before I started cutting it really short due to wearing a helmet all the time.

Now it's #4 on the top, #2 on the sides.

Pick something halfway between your top and side lengths to blend the lengths together around the crown of your head.

oh, i have only done that once... i check the back of my head w/ 2 mirrors after every cutting (which is twice a week most of the time).
after 20+ yrs of doing it, i only recall that once that i missed a spot. shaved before i caught a flight, had packed my travel shaver in my equipment weeks prior, didn't want to wait 3 more days before i got into my equipment...

anywho, anyone looking to shave their noggin, not to the "bone", those cheap clippers are great. no lines, no $20 haircuts, no tipping some person who did nothing but gossip the entire time you sat there and did a bad job...
my last haircut was when i grew my hair out while in the Army in the early 90s. can't recall what it's like.
first couple times you do it, it'll feel weird. sleeping on the pillowcase, if it's cold and you put on stocking cap, if it's warm and you go inside and feel the A/C... now, i don't even noticed cold/hot weather unless i'm exposed for extended periods of time.

I have to use 2 mirrors every time because I use the longest attachment available, which is a #12. It gives a 1 1/2" cut. I can't go by feel at that length.

Now if we lived in a less judgemental society I could do the same thing I did in 2000, which is to give myself a #1 all around. It was fun, some people really liked it, and it was great in hot weather. I no longer have the patience to deal with ignorant people though, and it is actually more work to have to shave it down every 2 weeks than for me to let it grow until it gets in my way or is too hot.

I grew my hair long and wore it down to the middle of my back for a couple of years. I found it to be an incredible pain to take care of, and have vowed since to never, never think less of a woman who decides to have a short hair cut. I mean, sure... I may like the look of a woman with long hair, but I also like the look of a woman with short hair. Or no hair. Face it; I'm a guy; I just like the look of women.

I hate long hair. Not only is it a PITA to take care of, but it is too hot in the summer. I'm very hot-blooded as it is, and my hair is very thick. Needless to say, I keep it short.

I like the look of shaved heads on men and women. Long hair also looks good on men and women, but I like shaved heads best.

I had a high and tight flattop for nigh on 20 years, then when I got poor I started shaving my own with a set of hand-me-down clippers, no guard on the sides and a #1 on the top. Now I'm back to having the flat top done, but for the summer I probably will go to the shorter cut. I can't stand having hair, but my scalp looks weird if I shave, so I have to leave a little bit up there or I get weird looks.

I also used to work at a halfway house for teens leaving the pokey, and I would cut all their hair as well. I was pretty good as long as you kept it at a number one or two guard! :)

On a side note, my next set of clippers will be a professional set. Probably this http://www.amazon.com/Oster-Professional-076076-123-Operation-Detachable/dp/B003U8BPY4. Not cheap, but I'm told they will last forever and my children will be passing them down to their grandchildren. I'm on my third set of conair or wahl cheepies from Walmart, the blades don't last long when your cutting at least three different family members hair usually every other week or once a month.

True dat. In my case, though, I've had the facial hair for 16 years and the shave for 8.

For my Halloween costume last year I shaved the beard completely for the first time since '95. My wife just about lost it.
