Tried putting a 46t FSA chainring on my Ultegra cranks last night (I'm running 10 speed drivetrain). When I shift the chain to the small front ring and any of the outer four cassette rings, it catches on lifting rivets of the 46t ring. Is there a remedy to this with spacers?

This is a compact double-ring crankset, right? A picture would be handy.
The rivet you refer to - it's not the orientation-pin is it? If so, the ring is installed the wrong way around. The pin should be aligned with the crank and face outwards, as in this diagram:

Yes it's a compact double and the big pin was on the outside. The chain was catching on the lifter pins even when it wasn't cross-chained on the cassette.

The Shimano inner ring must have put the chainline too close to the big ring because I installed a FSA inner ring (36t) and the issue is resolved. Guess I'll look for some FSA arms to complete the package.
