I run sram X.O and am very pleased with it. I would like to upgrade my brakes to the new Shimano hydraulic XT's. I was wondering if it is possible to run the new XT's without using the new shifter/brake pods from shimano.

Actually it is... they still have a seperate lever available (BL-M756) thats compatible with XT and XTR discs. That being said you have to deal with those new Centerlock hubs on the Shimano stuff now, unless you can find somewhere that still has the 6 bolt setup.

They still sell 6 bolt xt hubs at jensonusa and may other stores on prebuilt wheelsets. But do the XT calipers/brakes only work with centerlock dics? If not there shouldnt be a problem but that i dont know

Well, why not ditch Shimano entirely. Go with the Avid Juicy Sevens or Avid Mechs. Hayes also has great offerings.

Slowly but surely, Shimano is forcing everyone to choose. It's ALL SHIMANO or NO SHIMANO!!!! Anytime someone does this, I reflexively refuse to choose such a person or organization!!!

I stand corrected. Thank you. He doesn't HAVE to use the centerlocks he can get almost any six bolt rotor and run it with the Shi*No's. Personally I'd go with an Avid setup myself rather than play with the XT's.

Thanks for the advice- I was looking into the Avid Juicy's, too. I was leaning towards the XT's because I'd heard more about their performance.

Yes it is.

You will need to order from your LBS a pair of the following:

2X Shimano BL-M756 Hydraulic brake levers
or
2x Shimano BL-M555 Hydraulic brake levers
or
2x Shimano BL-M525 Hydraulic brake levers.

You will need the following brake hose kit:
Shimano SM -BH62/SM brake hose.
You need this hose because the XT caliper has a banjo fitting on the body and the levers that you can use with them have a straight entry. The the SM BH62 hose kit has the correct fitting on either end to mate with the lever and the caliper.

They work very well because I'm using that set up on my hardtail with Sram X.9 gripshift and rear derailleur except my calipers are BR M965 XTR.
It's also worth the effort because it out performs any brake out there when you use the M06 MEtal brake pads.
