View Full Version : Trek 7500fx or Giant Cypress SX

After a couple of months of shopping around, I have narrowed my bike decision to either a Trek 7500fx or a Giant Cypress SX. I have test-ridden each of them, but at different times. This weekend I'm going to a store where I can test ride them side-by-side. What I'd like to know first is are there better components on one than the other, or am I just going to need to decide by feel? Any input would be greatly appreciated, as this has been a lengthy process and I really want to be happy with my decision.

The Trek 7500fx is a "flat bar road bike" or "fitness" bike, meant for fast riding. It's handling is responsive and lively. (I own one).

Now, as for the Cypress...isn't it a "comfort" bike meant for cruising and so forth?

Um, no. The Cypress SX and SL are in the fitness bike category. I bought the SX a few months ago and use it as a commuter. It is an awesome bike. Consumer Reports rates it as it's their first choice in this category of bikes.

Six of one or a half dozen of the other. Both bikes are almost identical. Time to shop on price and shop service. Both are speced indentically and are almost equal in quality. Trek does seem to be more trendy, which could make it a target for thevies.

I was thinking the same thing about the "trendiness" of the Trek...I guess what will have to tip the scales is whichever one feels the nicest....and from what I can tell the Cycpress does look pretty good all tricked out as a commuter.

They do appear virtually identical, now that I do look at the specs. The 700x32s on the Trek probably make the all alum frame and fork more palatable. The Giant has a steel fork, but 28s. I keep the rear tire pumped up to max (87) and the front at 80. About the only difference would be the shifters; the Giant has grip shifters which I really like. But I'm sure I'd like the Deore's too. I didn't like Shimano's flat bar shifters that go with road derailleurs. They seemed too big.

Oh yeah, the color is different. I like black! Enjoy whichever one you get.

The Cypress handlebars are far lower......... the head is lower. I prefered that stance over the 7500.

(edit)........ I rode the 7500, which had the suspension. Not sure if the 7500fx is actually lower. The Cypress certainly looks lower.

I just bought the Giant Cypress SX about a month ago, and I love this bike! When I was looking for a bike in the $600-700 range, I also looked at the Trek 7500, the Specialized Sirrus, and the Jamis Coda. After test riding them all, I chose the Cypress because it seemed to have the best components for the price range, only 22lbs weight, and the ride was smooth. I just got into cycling this year, so I wanted the "road-bike-with-flat-handlebars" type before I jump into the big leagues with a real road bike.

It's kind of hard to find....but it's in the Comfort section....I had to do a search at first.

What about the new 2005 Giant CRX 1 Flat Bar Road bike? I am not sure about its pricing, though.

Hmmm...interesting about the CRX. I did a google search and found it on a bikestore website somewhere, but I can't find it on the Gaint web-site. Any direction you could give me on that bike would be great.

Thought I'd give an update and thank all the riders out there who gave advice. I finally decided on the Cypress SX and just got it today.

Went on a very short ride, and am loving it already, but I can't wait to take her on her official maiden voyage.

I just purchased the Cypress LX (with disc brakes) for $369 - it's a 2004 model. I love it! Check around; you might find a simiar bargain. Do a Dealer Locator search at giant-bicycle.com/ and then start calling around.

If possible, buy one in your general area; that makes it easier to have it serviced. My bike shop gives buyers a free tune-up 30 days after purchase and is quite reasonable about keeping it in good condition. In fact, the shop even offers a a 2-day seminar on how to care for your bike, which goes pretty deep, I've heard.

By the way, the Trek 7500 and Cypress SX aren't comparable models. Even the LX is a good bit cheaper than the 7500, though I could be wrong. One thing to consider is that the Cypress is easier on you in the long run, because you're not having to ride in a racing posture, but able to sit more upright.

For what it's worth, Consumer Reports rated the LX as the highest-rated hybrid, and i couldn't be happier with mine.
