Hi guys,

I was thinking on the train today (as you do) how much of a mountain bike you could build up soley using parts designed and manufactured in your country (in my case the UK).

Well, here's one I came up with :D

Frameset : Pace RC300
Forks: Pace RC35's
Brakes: Hope Disc
Hubs: Hope
B/B: Royce Ti
Cranks and Chainrings: Middleburn RS 7's
Seatpost: X-lite
Saddle: Brooks leather
Skewers: X-lite
Stem: Pace
Handlebars: USE

That's about as far as I got...the rest I figured would at best be of European origin;

Rims: Mavic (French)
Spokes and Nipples: DT Swiss (Urm..)
Front/Rear Mechs: Campagnolo (Italian)
Shifters: Campagnolo
Rear Block: Sachs (French/Italian?)
Chain: Sachs
Tires and tubes: Michiline (spelt horribly wrong)
Pedals: Time (French?)

How far would you get making up a bike from your country...remember, no Japanese parts allowed...(unless you're from Japan ofcourse :D)

Remember though that the pneumatic tyre was invented by a Scot (Dunlop) as was the first self propelled bicycle by Kirkpatrick Macmillan, a blacksmith of Dumfriesshire, Scotland.

Accordingly, as everything else is derived from these inventions, i could build a bike from all (ultimately) Scottish parts.

Ok, some of the bits have ben refined by other nations, but that's not the point. Where's my MacCampag shifter? :)

Hi Toolfreak
I always thought the Rond fork was designed and built by a dutchman like yourself - Gerard Rond. I have a Quake C 75 myself - built to last and still going strong. Mind you, Magura seem to have come into the picture more and its almost classed as a Magura fork rather than a Rond fork. I don't know the story behind it myself.

Weasel, your right, but Magura and Rond started up a few years ago; with Magura as manufacterer and Gerard Rond as oil and damping specialist, he used to be a motocross rider.
For now, i think Magura has taken over the shocks department, i don`t know if Rond is still part of it.
Btw, is it possible to build a MTB with Campag

Didn't they try it a few years back for a short while? I'm too new to this cycling world to know for sure but I seem to recall reading something about it...

Hi Rich and Toolfreak,

Yep indeedy, Campag made a few MTB groupsets that were super yummy....Euclid, Centaur, and a couple of others.

I'm not too sure what the current status is though.
