So, anybody else have any crazy quasi-bike-related ex stories? Problems with partners that don't understand/don't respect bike stuff?

The example below really isn't bike related except that she thought a bike related thing might hurt me... but still feel pretty :crash: about it and figured I'd share.

and I'm pretty sure that some people that know who I am will read this, so please follow my lead and refrain from using any names or identifying descriptions.
background:

I owed party X for groceries. I wrote a check. I broke up before that check could be deposited. Two weeks after it could be deposited, check bounced due to a LBS ****ing up a return and leaving me with no money in my checking acct. You now know entirely too much about me. Also, upon break-up, said party X wouldn't let me get my bike rack out of the trunk of X's car.

You can have the check or you can have the bike rack. I do not owe you both.

Ending our relationship was in your best interest, whether you can understand or accept that or not. The agreed payment for groceries and gas was imprecise and you know that. If you expect to audit your relationships, you may want to keep better track of expenses in the future. I do not owe you both the check and the bike rack, and I requested the bike rack to be returned to me while you had possession of the check, which is a reasonable request.

You took the bike rack.

If you are going to actively withhold my property from me, I do not owe you the things that I mistakenly still have of yours. I don't expect you to understand why that difference in intention is important, because at this point I honestly think it's beyond you. You have acted with a vindictive volition and you leave me no reasonable recourse.

I'm stopping payment on the check.

Civil discourse between responsible adults.

Edit: Though, this did make my night. :innocent:

I just watched a "Stansberry & Associates investment video" in full. :twitchy:

Reading things like this make me happy to be married. Sure my wife and I disagree and sometimes even fight but we don't do petty crap like this to try and hurt one and other.

IMHO: Both of you should grow up. Pay her whatever money is owed, and return her stuff. Once that happens it is reasonable to believe that she should return anything that is rightfully yours. Playing games, being overly dramatic, and making threats of selling/destroying property won't get either of you anywhere. Worst case scenario you return her stuff but she doesn't return yours. So you lose a bike rack but get to keep your self respect of being a man and owning up to a debt and not being petty and vindictive.

My advice: Take the high road.

I don't think cc is taking the low road here. He wants what's his and has always been his. Even if the relationship lasted, that bike rack was certainly still his.

I lost my favorite hoody to an ex recently. I contacted her a few times about it but never heard back. It was a hoody gifted to me by a close friend who I seldom get to visit/see anymore. So from the outside, yeah it seems petty to want something back. But we're human. We assign more than monetary value to certain objects. Or we simply want it back because we use it.

I hope you get your bike rack back, brother. And sorry to hear about any previous and/or subsequent heartbreak. That's why there's whiskey and The Cure.

yeah, this is something that lasted three months. that's nothing. if she was someone i spent any considerable time with i wouldn't be arguing over petty ****.

the bike rack is worth more than what i owe her in money, and she straight up said "i'm taking it as collateral" when i refused to give her more money than what was owed.

Pay the money you owe from your bounced check. Get your property back.

Funny thing is I had a breakup with a girl because I spent too much time with my bikes and not enough with her. She wrote me a letter and came into the shop I was working at the time and walked in back to where I was working. She handed me the letter and started crying. I was like wtf!?!?!, I had no idea what was going on. She left the store crying, never said a word, of course everyone is staring at me holding this letter. One of the mechanics grabbed it out of my hand and started reading it out loud in a thick fake french accent(she was french). I was laughing so hard at his performance it brought me to tears. She is long gone, still got the bikes though.

Why is this thread even here. Can we put it in Foo? or somewhere else where worthless threads go to die?

I do agree that this has absolutely nothing to do with this particular forum. Moving to Foo.

You have a choice not to read those too.

In case you hadn't noticed, there's and extensive number of sub-forums here on BF - each pertaining to certain subjects. Nothing against Charlie or anyone else but this really has nothing to do with either fixed gear or single speed bicycles.

Ex hated the bike, and everything bike related. But she also hated everything Ruben related so I guess the bike just happened to be own by the wrong person at the wring time... not the bike's fault. Anyway... I don't really like to talk about the ex anymore... the whole thing was just a big disappointment.

This is why you have to make them understand that if they wait long enough and prove they are worth it then you will build them a bike that is everything they ever wanted. My girlfriend and I have been together over a year now and she earned herself a powdercoated pink bicycle with pink everything else.

She loves it and now thinks I am the coolest boyfriend ever.

no offense but this is why you don't trust them with things you care about until you now you can actually trust them.... sounds like you had problems to begin with if this is how it is ending.

better luck next time!

That is about the sweetest breakup story I've ever heard. Far better to be struck by a train than to spend your last two months struggling against cancer in a hospice ward with the overpowering stench of your own poopy adult diapers filling your nostrils. Not only were you struck by a train, you had some friends present to find the humor in it. Double-blessed.
