Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Mr. Beanz Diagnosed With Illness

After an MTB ride the other day, he felt weakness on the ride. Weakness that worried him that maybe his wheels could not handle the pounding of rocks and river crossings. SO he...what am I talking about, it's me!:D

So I tell Gina that the low spoke count wheels on my MTB worry me. The just don't feel tough. I mention that I would like to build a wheel for the rear. Something that doesn't worry me when it comes to getting stranded out in the mountains with a thrashed wheel. So I mention buying a new 32 hole rear hub to build a wheel. She says cool. I got to look at the hubs and find a set of Deore hubs with Sun Rhyno Lite wheels. 32 DT spokes for $140 no tax from a bud that works at a shop. Not much more than a rear hub itself. If the wheels suck, I have the hub to rebuild. Front one too!

The illness part of the story? Gina asked what type of bikes my partners were riding. I told her they were both on 29'ers and I was the only dude on a 26 inch MTB. She asked what the difference was and I said that the 29'ers were suppose to be better at rolling over obstacles and a few other things ride partners mention. She asked if they were better for climbing, I said I think so.

She asks about price and I say, "I dunno, maybe 2 grand for a decent one".

So she says, " if you want one, I'll save up for one and get you a 29'er!:eek:

Now the sick part. I told her no, that if I want to climb better, I'll go on a diet.:D

Maybe I'm sick but I just don't see giving up my bikes thinking that a new one would make me a better rider. Heck, give me some strong wheels and I'm happy!:D

The new bike smell is a thrill but.........................Meh! I don't need it!

Those 29'ers are really sweet bikes. At my LBS I saw a guy road testing one, and when he came to the curb he didn't even bother slowing down. Went right up and on it as if he was running over a twig.

Beanz, Beanz, Beanz!!! We all know you've been sick for many years now. ;);) We also all know that a new bike isn't going to make you faster, it might make me faster, :lol: but that isn't the point. Sometimes you just deserve a new toy. Maybe it's time to treat yourself or let Gina treat you...that's what we work hard for in life. A little splurging now and then won't hurt you. :thumb::):)

I picked up a 29'er a few months back and really love it. I'm very surprised at the difference between a 26" wheel and the 29" wheel. I bought a rather entry level Specialized 29'er and already upgraded the wheels to Shimano Deore M525 Disc Hubs w/ Mavic 317 Rims and I'm happy with them so far.

Now, you have not really tested your resolve yet. You need to arrange another ride with your recent trail riding friends. After about 2 miles of riding, swap bikes with one of them. After that, if you are of the opinion that your new "little" :roflmao2: wheels are sufficient, than good for you. You will have a complete diagnosis at that time. I don't say this to strike up the 26 vs 29 debate, but I am going on my 2nd 29er and I can tell you that when you try to go back and ride a 26, it feels like a toy.

Either way, I would recommend that Gina go ahead with her savings plan. What bad can come of it.

What I think Mr. Beanz is trying to say is he decided he didn't really need a 29'er since he happens to have a perfectly usable mountain bike right now. It's also simply coincidence that this conversation conveniently coincided with NAHBS. After all, if you're a Clyde and you're worried about spoke count, why not go whole hog and get something custom built for your size? :)

Forget those 29ers (they are so yesterday) Get a 36er.
