Seems kind of silly only local pickup. One of the attractions of a BF is that it comes apart for travel.
We had a Bike Friday Tandem Traveler XL. It actually was a nice bike, although a bit whippy with an adult stoker. I would not plan on riding that bike very hard, with 2 adults and a kid.
I think it would be fine for an Adult and 2 small children even ridden hard, or 2 adults and a child doing a bit more casual rides.

Silly indeed. We sold our BF triple long distance without issues. Perhaps the owner does not want to worry about the transaction.
In my experience, the BF triple is actually fine for "hard" rides with two adults and one child -- however "hard" you can ride with a small child, that is. Our daughter rode with us from the age of 3 1/2-years to 9 1/2-years and, because my wife is quite light and skilled, we had no problem standing as a threesome to accelerate and climb hills. We like our PeriScope triple better, but sadly have much more trouble getting our now 12-year-old out on rides.
