As my account states I am from Portland Oregon USA.

I own a radio scanner and wondered if anyone else here does as well.

Some of the more interesting things I hear in this area are more common than others like;

1. Intentional Overdose
2. Seizures
3. Disturbance
4. Violence
5. Breathing but not alert
6. Security following thieves

What about you?

I used to have a friend that would post stuff from the radio scanner. I never really understood the interest that some people profess in hearing about this stuff. But you can find some funny stuff on occassion.

How else do you generally see DOA used for? Whenever I hear DOA in relation to an accident /incident related I know instantly what happened.

Scanners are not that entertaining in this neck of the woods as both the R.C.M.P. and ambulance are digital and the local fire departments are headed that way soon, so all that left are just the local businesses

I like to visit the Dallas Police Department's list of Non-Dispositioned Calls (http://www.dallaspolice.net/mediaaccess/), and the Dallas Fire-Rescue list of Active Incidents (http://www.firerescuephotos.com/fa/).

In fact, I got my custom user title from the DFR list.

I sort the DPD list by Division, because it puts my neighborhood at the top of the list, then I check what's going on around me. I've seen the building I live in listed a few times.

I'm not sure I would dare do that here in DFW.

Hey Dale, let's make this one a "gas and go" - it'll get us back on the lead lap. That's all I use a scanner for.

Dead on Arrival... usually electronics arriving on the mail that are bricks. Minimum warranty on most places, 5 days if DOA. First time I see the term used to describe a person's status. Seems just sad... :(

I just heard an intentional Overdose. Patient not responding or breathing.
A few years back on valentines day, I heard of a couple of ambulance drivers laughing joking around about a guy who was caught cheating on his girlfriend and she stabbed a screwdriver in his ear

Originally it was a medical term used to describe a patient who didn't make it when traveling by ambulance to the hospital. They are Dead On Arrival. The electronics industry has coopted it for their own use to essentially mean the same thing.

I heard "man not conscious and barely breathing" the other day but that was about 100 feet behind me which meant a quick descent into Little Rock.

An alternative to DOA is DRT, meaning dead right there.
