How the almost-slicks fitted as stock handle offroad? Especially on gravel and packed dirt?

They work great. I don't care for the stock one's but rather use the Armadillo version. They roll much better on pavement than the stock one's. But the stock one's perform just as well on dirt as the Armadillo version. Just no flat protection.

+1. Stock Boroughs were great, comfortable, reasonably fast tires. And a fracking magnet for road debris. Flatted every week.

Thanks - I'm trying to decide between semi-slickish Marathon Duremes and
Marathon Extremes, which have more tread, so this is very useful.

I agree with the above - I was impressed with how the stock Boroughs performed on loose stuff - much grippier than expected. But they are pretty thin and puncture too easily on the road.

I have the stock Borough CX and loved them for all the kinds of terrain i took them on. Mostly road , but also macadam and gravel carriage trails. I also frequently hop curbs and ride over grass and dirt while crossing highways and such and they work great. They do however get flats when i run over sharp things because they are so thin. Mostly metal will give me a flat rather than glass. Every time I get a flat I usually find the equivalent of a staple or metal shard sticking through the tire. They seem to have a weakness for these.
My next upgrade were going to be the Borough Armadillo, but they seem to have disappeared from Specialized's website and am having difficulty finding them elsewhere on the web. Perhaps they were cancelled?

A few months ago I pulled out a sliver of glass from mine. The shard cut deep, but very luckily only into a side knob (softer rubber). I only noticed the intrusion when the trail ended and the road began, and I started hearing the periodic sound of grinding glass on pavement.
However my reply might be irrelevant in that my Tricross came stock with Houffalize.
As for the Houffalize, they're pretty tacky out on the trail (70a center, 60a shoulder) and don't pack in much mud.
