Tell your IT weenies to get off the stick and get you a secure, up-to-date browser, even if it's a newer version of Internet Exploder. Explain to them that by keeping that insecure, buggy relic, they are putting the company at risk.

Then maybe you should listen to them and get to work surfing to all the nice sites that exploit the endless bounty of security holes in IE6 :thumb:

The internet, web standards, security, usability...

Have you tried Portable Firefox (http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable)? Loads onto and runs from a USB stick, no installation necessary.

have not....may research this. TY.

The portable firefox works well unless IT has the USB ports locked down as well, to prevent any file transfers to or from the computer. I point out that this is not unusual in healthcare, to prevent people from copying charts or installing software on the workstation.

If I was in a dept with access to private customer oriented info, it would be the same. But we are actually encouraged to download work and do it at home. Like I don't give this place enough of my time

I could not get into BF at all because of IE6. I made a business case for an upgrade to IE8 (which I love). Why can't you do the same? It's not that difficult to upgrade and I'm sure the company has plans to do it... about 15,000 of my company's employees are still on IE6. I got tired of waiting and complained.

IE 6 sucks

Fixed.

Upgrade. Start with a newer version of IE or get Safari, Firefox, etc. and then upgrade from XP. Hell, if you're running XP and IE6 you won't be able to view many sites correctly these days.

Yeah I understood Modo was at work and had no authority to change the system - I don't either - I had the same problem. My company is still on Windows 2000 and was/is using IE6. I couldn't see anything including our vendors websites to order product. So I sat myself downa nd wrote ut a one page proposal as to why Pam needs IE8. I was surprised, they bought it!

Hopefully, (although in MV's case unopefully) any smart admin will have disabled the launching of executables off of a portable drive.

Not sure why you would cry. It's no worse than Firefox which crashes all the time and is a memory hog and has to constantly update itself every 2 weeks aand is as riddled with security bugs as IE6 was before SP2. (Only difference is IE stopped the every 2 week exploits several years ago - Firefox still hasn't)

Or Safari which can get pwned within 1-5 seconds by hackers willing to show their faces on TV/camera.

Or Chrome which Safari in a different body. :p

Or Opera which is quite crash friendly and has a tendency to deliver an update which breaks 1/10th of the most popular websites used by people and take a month to ship an update to fix it.

If you use enough of the browsers hard enough you'll find they all suck in their own way. :p

or another browser that uses a barely maintained bastard fork of the Gecko engine - which is the engine that firefox uses.

I've got Chrome, ChromePlus, Dragon, Safari, IE9RC, FF4B12, and Opera 11. I prefer to twitch slowly as I uncover their various weaknesses.

Comodo Dragon (http://download.cnet.com/Comodo-Dragon/3000-2356_4-75119680.html?tag=mncol;1) is kinda like Chrome, but not as annoying with the ads.

That review looks weird, however.
"not strewn with numerous icons". Last time I checked Chrome had like one icon. One of the things that annoyed me about it and now annoys me about IE9. You can't do anything with it. Doing anything besides clicking a link requires moving your mouse over and opening and diving into a sub menu.

Ironically there were 3 Ads - 2 of them Large ones (that's what she said) for Downloading IE9 on that page.

I didn't see them, but I was using Opera with NoAds enabled. Just like I have AdBlock for FF, Chrome and it's clones. IE9 kills all ActiveX by default, but renders most pages unviewable until you disable it. Couldn't stream any audio or video until I figured that one out.
