Classic and Vintage Bicycles: What's it Worth? Appraisals and Inquiries - Ciocc designer 84

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for something a little more classy than my '85 Miyata 912 and have taken a likeing to Cioccs. Right now I'm lusting after this one on the bay.

The $850 buy it now price seems pretty darn steep even though repainted and rechromed. What do you'll think.

Well, I think of it this way.

All of the refinishing work is complete and looks great.

Love the color.

The price is close to a new Pelizzoli frameset made from Columbus SL.

That's a fairly nice frame, but what is it that you like in particular about Ciocc's? I ask only because there's a not a whole lot about that frame to distinguish it from other nice Italian frames of the same period.

55 c-c seat and top tube should fit. The top tube is the same and the seat tube is 1 cm longer than my Miyata. But the Miyata is just a hair small.

For me, it's about how the earlier ones had those neat skinny lugs with the cutouts. It took extra care to braze those metal slivers without cooking them - definitely more about technique than speed. It's always interesting to hear what attracts people to a particular builder, aside from reputation and following the herd.

We have or develop emotional attachments for builders and brands, no doubt.

I am curious about this brand, and my interest has been greatly piqued by a "re-emergence" of discussions surrounding Mr. Pelizzoli on several forums.

If the op wants to hop into the waters, there are so many fascinating options.

This may be one way to enjoy the fruits of an interesting builder, and I don't happen to think $850 is so bad for a nice handmade frame.

Especially a very nice refurb.

I like the chrome forks, with the design on the crown, and chrome stays. I also like the colors which are often more muted than some of the other Italian frames. They just look classy; I don't really know how else to describe it.

My riding style is go out and ride for an hour around the neighborhood or for several hours around the city. I do a lot of activities for exercise. I like to bike to be outside watching the world go by.

I put an Ultegra/Dura Ace drive train, the shiney stuff, with Dura Ace breaks and Sugino Alpina cranks and nice Nitto seat post and stem on my Miyata. I would most likely just move it over. Although I understand putting Shimano on an Italian bike is generally frowned upon.

Bianchigirll, yes the fine print, had to bump up the screen size, indicates a “3-stage finish (decals are clear coated over)”.

I think you can do better. That frame is really nice but used Jaxed.com to search for a Ciocc and see what comes up. There is a facilitators thread in the Classics and Vintage forum so if you find a nice, complete Ciocc somewhere in America, chances are that it can be yours.

Always possible to do better, and believe me, I watch jaxed as well, but this one is as clean and fresh a slate as you're going to find.

The only issue I had was the simple fact that you can grab a brand new Pelizzoli frame for about a grand.

That Pelizzoli site is like a radar beam on my bike fund!

I like it a lot too but I wonder why they didn't fill in the 'Ciocc' on the seat-stay cap? Is the paint too thick to allow for this?

As nice as it is I think I'm going to pass on making an offer. I did some reading on the impact of steeper seat and head tube angles, how they effectively lengthen the top tube, and I'm worried they would stretch me out too much without resorting to a ridiculously short stem. I would hate to spend that kind of money and end up with a poor fit. So, I'm looking for a 54 cm.

I agree with your decision to pass, as I am finished with "making do" on frame sizes.

Too many nice bikes out there that will work perfectly well, so you are wise to continue the search process.
