This isn't a thread about curing insomnia, I'm just curious as to what's keeping people up at night. I go through bouts of insomnia. It's usually caused by thoughts of work. Thinking about lists of things I need to work on the next day.

What's your reason(s)?

I always take a nap in the late afternoon. I think the nap offsets my usual "wake up" that comes around 1 or 2 in the morning. Sometimes I go right back to sleep. Other times I stay up for a while. I really love that quiet time. If I don't have work the next day, and sometimes when I do, I might stay up for an hour or so and read or watch TV.

South Park is starting at 12:00 so I can't go to bed now :)

Actually, I tried going to sleep an hour ago but I can't sleep. I've had a awful time sleeping since the beginning of the year. If it continues, I'm going to go see a specialist about it. Sometimes I sleep six hours at night but I had a wonderful string of four hour nights last week. Last night I may have slept three hours. Tonight isn't looking good for me as well and I have a meeting early in the morning. Yay me!

Mind numbing TV. Kids go to bed, and the wife and I hang out for an hour or two. Wife goes to bed, and usually reads, so I do not go back to bed then, as I do not want to ruin her reading time. I tell myself that I need to watch just a bit to unwind and soon it is midnight or later.

I think this is self induced insomnia.

Bizarre, freaking dreams!
Sometimes I'm back in the Army barracks.
Sometimes the whole world is flooded and I'm swimming around in my speedo past all the drowned/bloated/smelly corpses and debris. In a mall, (and I haven't been inside a mall in this millenium.) I'm also swimming up and down staircases, which is pretty cool.
Sometimes flying, but not like superman, more like I'm swimming freestyle to pull myself through the air.
And sometimes I'm copulating on the moon with a girl in a space suit joined to mine 'down there', looking through the bubble face-shield trying to see who she is.

Just glad I amn't sleep walking anymore. For four months, I was unable to sleep for more than 3 hours at a time due to a popped disk in my spine. Even on worrisome med levels, I'd have to walk around until the pain subsided, then go back to sleep. But after the second surgery was finally successful and I was able to sleep through the night, I continued to get up, walk around, and I'd wake up walking in the street at 2am! I finally stopped this by stacking coins on my doorknob. Coins'd clatter, I'd wake up, have a good laugh and go back to bed.

Didn't the local police issue an alert to watch out for you a while back?

Yep. Apparently the most strenuous possible exercise is walking thirty feet to climb into bed.

And on that note, as I'm typing this trying to keep my eyes open, I'm off to stare at the ceiling for approx. 2 hours.

For a long time now, I've had to go until I just drop; stepmother passing didn't help that, either (end of Jan). It's less impactful now, since I'm on vacation this week (during SUCK weather!), but I still don't like being up half the night, then falling out for a nap in mid/late afternoon. Almost always wake up grumpy, and the kids don't deserve that.

Less of an issue in warmer weather, as I wear myself out more on the bike.

I don't think so. The nice driver saw my Homer Simpson pajamas and stopped in time, tooted his horn, which woke me up. That was the last time, because I decided I had to do something about it.

BUT we do have an old-folks home kitty-corner from where I live "with special neighborhood for the memory impaired." Every once in a while one of them makes it over the wall and gives the Carlsbad Police Department something to do. They've had HELICOPTERS looking for these guys twice, with the loudspeakers giving the escapees description, clothing, etc.

Last night's dream was about a weird snake in an inflatable kiddy-pool in the yard. All five of the dogs were gathering around barking at it, and I was trying to keep them away from it. The snake was going after them and the house was locked so I couldn't put the dogs inside. They wanted to get at the snake just as badly as the snake wanted to get at them. I couldn't find any stick or weapon or anything, but I had a collapsible television antenna in my pocket, so I used that to dispatch the weird snake. And since the stupid antenna was so flimsy, it took a long time to kill the snake; it kept collapsing, so stabbing wouldn't work, and it was too light to do any damage if I swung it like a stick. I felt bad about killing that snake, but it felt like I didn't have any choice.
