Foo - been thinking about getting a gym membership

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I live right next to 24hour fitness but do they even allow guests to come with you like LA Fitness...which i also live right next to.
I like the pool, the classes, the weights at both gyms.
I'll probably never use the treadmills though lol.
Oh, I don't know. Is a gym membership a waste of money?

The LA Fitness there lets you have guests for free?
If you live in an office world I think having a gym membership that you go to semi-regularly is pretty valuable. Just make sure you tell them you want a good deal :D

yep the LA Fitness lets guests come with you for free. it's pretty awesome.
I don't know how much the rates are at LA though. I called and they just said "come in and we'll discuss rates with you ;)"
well at least it sounded like they were winking lol
I hope one of those 24 hours is a happy hour. ;)

They do. Generally the rates here are like 30-40 a month. Though it might be a bit cheaper if you don't get their anywhere plan - which usually means you can only use local facilities (not out of state).
They can be negotiated down on the price/setup fee. I got mine with no setup fee. :)
Here Guests are usually 15/30 a month extra.

24 Hours here are usually super super packed, so I doubt there's a happy hour.

They are only a waste if you don't use the gymn. Which is what happens to most memberships.

Agreed. I paid about 300 once a long time ago to Bally's and went 3 times. Ugh.

:roflmao: At that price you could have gotten 6-9 personal training sessions. :p Those are usually more fun than working by yourself.
I think one of the things that you can do if you want to try to make better use of your gym membership is try working out with friends. Even if you have to swap out people 2-3 times a week.
Usually better than working alone. And it's proven you have a higher chance of reaching your goals. </LAFitness>

Just ride more and buy some weights. You can do a lot with just a few dumbells.
Better to buy these things up front and use them for years on end than flush your money down the toliet each month/year making someone else richer.
Problem Solved. Next Case.

Be sure to use those weights...they won't do you a lot of good if all you do is buy them.

I love having my gym membership and I go at least once a week, but the two things about my gym I'd change are the habits of those who frequent it:
~The gym unfortunately has big-screen TVs all over the place, and these homesteaders just sit on the machines I want, and watch &$^%#$ Oprah for 10 minutes at a time! I've been tempted to grab some change-of-address cards from the post office, so I can hand them to these turkeys.
~I wash my hands when before and after working out, and about half of the time, these clods with multiple tattoos and backwards-baseball-caps traipse straight out of the urinal without washing their hands! (And now you know why I also wash them after working out. NASTY.)

I go to the gym (24 Hr Fitness) quite a bit during the winter months. Once the weather starts warming up I lose the motivation. I'd much rather ride my bike - road or mountain - for exercise. Colorado is too nice to be indoors then.
