Im going to be purchasing new pedals for my bike, I've used Shimano spd's and they are fine for what commuting,
Im getting crankbrother eggbeaters "1"
Anyone have any toughts on these pedals? Also, Are they hard to skid on? Because on the SPD, I had to keep my foot parrelle to the ground, Took maybe 2-3 minutes of skidding to get used too, But it was a problem for the first couple of miles.
Thanks in advance
Oh yeah, Are the cleats for the eggbeaters the same bolt pattern as SPD?
Nvm that question found out.

I've heard some good things about eggbeaters,
IE: resources to rebuilds, Easy assemble. Easy to clip in out,
Only question i have is how to clip in, I went to there website and looked up the engagment, they explain it the most complicated way possible.

I don't know about skidding but I now have eggbeaters on all my bikes, road, MTB, tandem...
They use the same cleat pattern as the spd's

well i'll probally wont be skidding at all, Because they'll be on my commuter bike witch has brakes,
And i hardly even skid in general.
I did some more research, They said it wont unclip from pulling vertically. So skidding shouldl'nt be a problem.

I ride eggbeaters on my tracklocross rig. Excellent pedals, super light, 4 contact points to clip into. Never had a problem skidding on them until I put cross tires on. Pretty easy to clip into, just kick forward and push down. You'll get the hang of it really quickly if you're used to clipless pedals. The cleats follow the standard SPD pattern.
The only issue I've ever had with them is when I put too much pressure in the forward direction (like one might if one skids constantly), they tend to unclip every once in a while.

I use eggbeaters on my bike and I've never had a problem with accidentally unclipping when skidding and I've never had an issue getting into or out of them, the 4 sided entry is really nice as well.

Could just be that my cleats are a little worn, but I've definitely heard the same complaint from my buddy who rides the 'beaters on his mtb rig.
I never had an issue with unclipping while skidding just don't bottom out on a curb or you foot will pop out
I have eggbeaters on all my bikes, unclipped by accident only a few times. Usually when cleats have to be replaced. I had problems w last years' eggbeater 1 (lowest?) - one pedal was noticeably looser than the other and kept unclipping even w new cleats. I replaced that set.

I've read a lot of those problems, They said warrenty them, Or pop off the dust cap and tighten the axel nut.
if the spring is looser recharge the spring.

One little gripe I have is that the cleats are made of brass, which is not as durable as Shimano or other steel cleats with all the walking and clipping in and out.
I still like my Wellgo WPD the most.
one word of caution. I have used them. when you skid, if you "lift up" while skidding you will bend the bars on the egg beater and render them useless.... happened to me on 2 sets.. they were the Ti's and not the S.S. ones

You must me pulling up extremely hard then, I pull up when I skid on a daily basis and mine show zero sign of bending, I've never actually heard of that.
No i hardly pull up.... my Time ATAC's have lasted me since then with zero issues and I have not changed technique. I mainly lock up my leg more than I pull up.
never had much lock with egg beaters on my MTB either too

i have egg beaters, though the nicer ones. never had any problems. if durring a cx race in deep thick mud i cant unclip from pulling up, im sure youll be fine skidding. hell i skid just fine in them and im a big guy...
I did just score some atac xs pedals super cheap the other day, been wanting a pair for a while. suposed to better than eggbeaters, im looking forward to using them. however, im gonna miss the 4 points of contact...

I've had numerous pairs of Crank Brothers pedals from various points in their heirarchy, from high-end models to low-end models. They all either broke, fell apart, or otherwise developed problems. The CB clipless mechanism is an interesting design and works well considering its minimalism, but the pedals just aren't very reliable. I have never had any accidental unclips with them...but I've had lots of worse things happen, such as the eggbeater part of the pedal snapping off, axles bending and breaking, and the whole pedal sliding off the spindle...any one of these could have been catastrophic.
I have since switched back to SPDs and Looks and have never had a pedal failure since.

you wont miss the 4 points of contact one bit. i run 6 pairs of TIME's everything from the plastic body to the carbon body not a single issue on any one of them.
I have a pair of Eggbeaters and I like 'em. The only downside is that the cleat isn't the most adjustable...it's either 10 or 15 degrees of float before disengaging. Nothing bigger, smaller, or in between.
But that doesn't bother me. They're durable and easy, so I'm happy.

Well im using these in vs my dura ace track pedals, where at a red i have to unsinch out, where as too when im trackstanding, And i happen to loose my balance on the bike and i fall over.
These pedals will go on my fixie and road bike. And I'm not really going to max performance,
I also dont skid. When i do skid, Its when its raining, Just to see how far i go(: Or when i go to school and the asphalt was just cleaned, And all slippery.
My pedals will be here friday, I'll see whats up. Friday's i have a good 12 mile ride one way. so i'll probally feel them out for a while.

Sounds good man, I don't think you will be disappointed at all.
Yes, same bolt pattern.
Crank brothers are great until they break. But you're only on road I assume so they will be fine.
Cleats are SPD style unless you get Quattros. They do wear faster than shimano because they're brass so be aware of that I guess.

I just put on my new atac xs pedals, and i must say they will take a little getting used to... they are way more secure than my eggbeaters. like im a little nervous about crashing in them. i know when i crash in the eggbeaters i pop free pretty easily... these im not so sure about...

Just don't crash.....lol
one caveat that has yet to mentioned in Egg Beater use, is how they can damage/wear out the bottom of your shoe. As shown in the images attached.
193099
The first image/shoe (Sidi Dragons) had been used for, roughly, 5 years, with Egg Beaters. I replaced the shoe when I noticed the cracking, near where the pedals wings slam into the bottom of the sole, during engagement.
193100
The second image/shoe (Shimano M122) had only 2.5 years of use. Crank Brothers does make an accessory called Shoe shields, which is a small piece of steel that will protect the bottom of the sole, but it will wear out, too. When it wears, the engagement of the pedal won't feel quite as secure: A TINY amount of play is discernible, the greater the amount of wear, a greater amount of play can be discerned.
193103
All in all, I'm fairly happy with the Egg Beater SLs (I've yet to encounter any problems with them), I've had 2 pairs of Candys (SL, and a pair of the lowest end ones, I forget the model designation) die out on me for two different reasons each: The wings corroded/wore out and pedal bearings developed significant play (pedals wobbled about 2mm in each direction) in them.
My favourite thing about them is the four sided entry. Which in practical terms, means I can clip in backwards: As in, stepping backward to engage the pedal, as opposed to always stepping forward. Stepping straight down works, most of the time, too. The ground clearance that Egg Beaters have is nice, too!
For that convenience and ease of use I continue to use them. But, should both of the bikes that I have Egg Beaters on them die out simultaneously, I'd be open to trying out a different pedal system. I've heard some great things about Time ATACs.

I have never used eggbeaters after seeing two of my friends fail within a week of each other on spindle broke on a two week old pair in the middle of traffic and the other guy broke a tine in the middle of an alleycat causing a pretty nasty wreck
ATACs are the way to go they are pretty inexpensive very secure and very reliable

So Bikesdirect F'ed me in the face.
I just got to the shop, Open up the box, Hold and be told my eggbeater sl's are in two pieces. Wtf.
I look at it i though o know problem just got to rebuild it..
No, They sent me two left pedals,
One was with a Destroyed spindle, Cracked down the center.
the other one with a alot of wear.
And the completely broken didn't even have bearings in it.
i contacted bikeisland, They havent yet responded due to the fact that they are closed.
But i'm waiting For jeff to respond.
I hope this will be an easy transaction if not, I'm just going to warranty the pedals or get CB to rebuild. since they are up the The street
Quick question, What grease should i use on the spindle?

Hold and be told ...
Lo and behold?
hold and be told sounds like a michael bolton song
I didn't like eggbeaters. I just felt they were flimsy and didn't have enough support. I now use Times. I like these enough to have them on multiple bikes.

i wish i could find the old pics speedgoat had of shaved atac cleats so i could see where to shave mine to get the release where I want it. does anyone have copies of those photos? I am hoping these last as I have already had a pair of EB SL's warrantied for a bent spindle and i have bent them again... I might just set them aside for CX racing as they are great for that.
since when does bikesisland sell used parts? I have a hard time imagining them selling you broken pedals...
