Electronics, Lighting, & Gadgets - Redline 3-AAA 220 Lumins $30

I just purchased two of these flash lights from Batteries Plus for $30 each. They have 4 functions and has a beam to wide angel function 1x to 4x. On 100% it has a reported 4hr burn time and at 110 lumins it advertises 8 hr. Amazingly bright. Will have both on my commuter bike.:D

but this seems a pretty obscure piece of hardware. DealExtreme sells lots of lights in this price and brightness range. I'd avoid this one because:

- Zoom optics are problematic, especially cheap ones, especially with LEDs. The beam pattern will be ringed, which is a distraction if you're navigating rough tracks. Ymmv.

- 3AAAs aren't going to last long on a decent brightness setting

- There's nothing to say the light is regulated, so it probably isn't. So it will start bright and fall off as the cells drain.

Yep, that is the light. I just purchased them and they are very bright. Also they were local from BP so I did not have to order them. Seems like a lot of light for the money imo but thanks for your opinion. Give me one example from DE that gives 220 lumins and is of this quality for $30. I will use these for street biking and camping. There is a little ring but I don't find it an objection. Just seem like a good deal for a multi use light.

I picked up one of these from Batteries plus last year for around $24. Not a bad flashlight for around the house, but I wouldn't rely on it for riding, except as a backup. Not as bright as my Fenix L2D Q5, which is rated as 220 on Turbo, and the throw is not nearly as good. No way will it last 4 hours on high, more like 2-2.5 hours, and as meanwhile mentioned, the lumens do drop off as it burns down. Not a problem if you carry 3 extra batteries with you per torch. One disadvantage vs a 2 AA light is changing those tinier AAA batteries while you are riding in the dark or cold - much easier to drop in the AA's without having to mess with the AAA holder.

It's not a bad light - don't feel bad about buying it. I use mine around the house and walking the dog at night, have even loaned it out to other riders that were light challenged.

Thanks for the info. Guess I have been out of the loop of lights for a while. Just happened to be in the BP store to drop some old batteries for recycling and saw the light. Will keep them for house/backup lights. Since DST will be here this weekend, I'm not looking to upgrade my bike lights any time soon. Later this fall maybe but will wait to see what happens with MS and Geoman.

Deal Extreme might sell this light cheaper, but the price you paid was less than half what a similar brand name light would cost. Re. regulation, you usually have to pay more to get it. Whether you need it depends on how you use the light.
