Hello All!
It has been one week today since starting my diet and walking routine. I lost 3.6 pounds. I was hoping for a higher number, but happy with that.
I also visited my LBS and put money down towards my Trek. In 2 weeks, i will have it! He looked so sad being locked up in the dark, i wanted to spend time alone with him lol! I assured him that when i get his butt out of there, that my butt will be on his all the time! So rest while you can!!

3.6 pounds is a lot for one week. A healthy loss would be around 2-2.5 pounds a week. Any faster isn't good and won't stick. You're on the way down and that's what counts keep it up!

And good for you, XLTKID. Steady, slow weight loss is better for you and more likely to be permanent. I've been losing just over a pound a week, on the average. Doesn't sound like much, I know, but after a year and a half, I'm down by about 70 pounds without any extreme lifestyle changes that would be hard to sustain. I eat the same stuff, but in healthier proportions. I go to the gym, paddle farther and faster when I go kayaking, and ride my bike every chance I get. It's not an ordeal in any way. It's fun, and it gets more enjoyable, not less, as you get more fit, look better, and -- more important -- feel better.

It's not uncommon to have a bigger loss in the first week. Also, depending how fat you are you can lose weight faster. I lost about 25 pounds in my first two weeks; that was five years ago, and I've done pretty well since. :-)

While it is more then optimum, the key is to AVERAGE 2 - 2.5lbs a week, within that some weeks you will lose a little more, some weeks a little less, but over say a 13 or 26 week period the average is around 2lbs a week. It's not uncommon to pull some larger numbers the first few weeks.
I don't know a single person who didn't lose more initially, and have it taper off after the first several weeks, regardless of how carefully they ate or how much they exercised. Averaging 2 pounds a week is certainly doable, but even that rate is tough to maintain over the long term. I managed to keep my average at or slightly above 2 from April to late August, but after that it got spotty.
While a single pound lost over the course of a week isn't as immediately gratifying as a larger loss, it's nothing to sneeze at. We all know (especially those of us who are more, um, mature) how quickly a year goes by. Wouldn't it be great to be 50 pounds lighter when that year is up?
