I think the title says it all. I like sugino and all city, but there are some vintage chain rings that are appealing. Tell me what you would buy for someone riding in a very urban (nyc) get anywhere type atmosphere... (i do at least 20 miles on a ****ty day)

For riding in nyc i'd recommend a less blingy crank.I find my origin8s comparable to my rds at half the price.Unless you never lock up,then i second squirrelli.
I agree with the Origin 8. I have a pair and they serve me well.

If you have the cash, Omnomonomnomonom's are really the best bang for the buck. Bikeisland has 'em for $165 shipped! With bb.
If you can't afford those, the Sram S300 couriers would be a perfect alternative.
However every other option the previous posters replied with are also equally good choices.

was also looking at cranks, esp since the miches at ribble are only 130ish shipped now. how noticeable would the difference be compared to, say, my current setup of generic '09 khs flite 100 cranks + origin8 chainring?
adriano

it would be nonexistent.

SRAM Omniums are very nice. I prefer them over my Sugino 75s, and I got an entire crankset with a BB for less than a pair of 75 arms only.
Before I scored a deal on the Omniums, I was seriously considering Andel 144 BCD cranks (there are several rebrands of this crank) and SRAM S300 Couriers, both of which have gotten pretty good reviews.
The difference between cheap stock cranks and a nice set of cranks is not non-existant, but it is small. I recently replaced a stock Kilo crankset (Truvativ Touro) with a set of 75s, and the difference in stiffness is noticeable. A lot of other factors play into the stiffness of your right, though, like the frame, wheels, etc. That said, I cannot speak specifically for the Miches, as I've never tried them.

You guys are on crack..high end cranksets on a bike in NYC? Sure, that's a good idea. Bike theifs sure will be happy that they only have to unscrew two bolts with an allen wrench to get free omniums.

Andels are stiff and inexpensive. Missing the bling factor too.

If you want 144BCD and have the cash, I would recommend Omniums or Sugino 75s. I don't think you'll notice much of a difference between the two performance wise, so pick whichever one makes more sense to you (aesthetically, wallet friendly, etc).
If you want 130BCD, I think the SRAM S300 Couriers are a pretty attractive and affordable crankset, but I have no personal experience with them. Sugino RD2/Messengers are popular as well, in addition to some cheaper sets e.g. Eighth Inch.

anyone know any good tricks to keep omniums from being taken from allen wrench owners?
i guess i can take my cranks off before leaving my bike unattended. seems like a major pain though.

crazy glue in the allen hole. You shouldn't have to take them off all that often. Not 100%, but they can't just stick the wrench in there and go. Takes maybe 2 min to clean out when you do need to get them off.

Super glue & ball bearings? :)

The spindle on the Omniums is hollow. Wouldn't the thief be able to simply push the bearings really hard into the axle?

Cover it with a coin + glue.
It would literally take .05 seconds to knock off a glued-on coin.

Yeah, but then you'd be ruining what you're trying to steal.

how many bike thieves are knowledgeable enough to know about omniums and how to remove them?

One more because of this thread.
Edit: I don't steal bikes, bro. Came out ominous.
Since switching from fixed to single speed, I wanted to get into longer crank arms so I recently just ordered the $40 Vuelta Pista crankset off of BikeIsland because they were 144BCD, relatively light, and cheap. It hasn't gotten here yet but I already know it will be fine. I've sunk a lot of money into my bike but when it comes to cranks, I just DGAF because it's just never something that I find holds me back.
EDIT: I'm switching from Eighthinch cranks.

How so? The spindle is hollow and it would just come right out through the drive side.

Hahaha.
Anyways, I have a feeling bike thieves are going to start carrying around acetone with them so they can continue stealing nice parts.

SRAM S100s are better bang for the buck than origin8, etc. IMO. Usually sold w/ BB. I've got a set with some miles on them now and they've been great.
