Classic & Vintage - A quick question - and then: Let's see your vintage ride with a STRONGLIGHT crank

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

My question: Stronglight 99 triple - asymmetrical spindle I suppose, but what length have worked for you?
And then, show off your vintage favorite with those artfully cast Stronglight spiders, and maybe drilled rings. There's was a bewildering selection of cranks offered over the years, from the 49 to the, what? 105? But all very attractive designs, and, some may say, better workmanship than TA.
Tell what's your favorite, and why; and also enlighten me as to the Mod.57 (http://cgi.ebay.com/NOS-Stronglight-Mod-57-Competition-crankset-chainring-/150573477324?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item230ee0edcc) that currently have 20 bids and reached $320, yet doesn't look much different than the 93.
Have at it, lads!

For the mod. 99 as a double, I use a 118mm Stronglight spindle, same as the mod. 93. I can't say I have a favorite between 99, 93, and 49D. I really like the 99 set up as a compact double and have some very nice 86bcd drilled rings in the parts bin:

I had a Stronglight 93 on my Gitane Tour de France in the early-to-mid-1970s. I liked it because it gave me wider gearing options due to the slightly smaller-than-Campy bolt circle diameter - highly advantageous in very hilly northwest Arkansas.

I think one of the sexiest crankset sets EVER is a model 93 with 105 bis (Factory drillium) chain rings. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures. I discovered this set up when I couldn't find 122mm BCD replacement Chain rings (back before the internet) for the 93 crankset on my Super Course Mk II. I could only find the 105 bis chain rings and it really looks fabulous! I think it looks better than the 105 crankset, any day!

193191 I know, I know, wrong dust caps. Back in 74 or so I was able to find some at least! The originals were no longer usable from abuse by the PO. And don't talk to me about the pedals either!
For a brief time several years ago I fell for the fixie fad. It didn't take. No worries, nothing on the gas pipe Olmo was harmed. I did sell it for a ton of money.

Sorry, Jan, that I can't help with your query. But, I can post of pic of the model 93 for which I traded Neal. It polished up nicely. The NOS track ring was from CV-6. It took me a while to warm up to the Stronglights with star shaped spiders, but I'm pretty fond of them now.

I've always like the look of a Stronglight 93 crankset.
If I ever build a fixed gear, it will have a 93 equipped.

I had a 'stash "back-in-the-day", but if I grow it out now it is significantly lighter than my (dark brown-to-gray) hair color. Blame it on the genes, I guess. Anyway, I envy your 'stash.

Stronglight 104, installed just last night with a 122mm spindle (~+6mm DS), actually measured at about 121. (I have an Italian spindle labeled 118 that measures closer to 119).
I could not find any English SL cups, so I used Campy thin cups (Victory) for the install.

Virtually ever single sixties Legnano Nocostalota Corsa (http://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpeeds_1/Feature_Bicycles/Feature_Bicycles_Itlay/Legnano_Tipo_Roma/Legnano_Tipo_Roma_1_Introduction.htm) was fitted with the Stronglight cottered crank set. I like most Stronglight cranks but prefer the older ones (also of course mod. 49, 93), especially models 57 and 63 because of vintage looks and race pedigree.
My preference often changes from day to day but if I had to pick only one I guess it would be model 63.

My 84 Peugeot PSV with a Stronglight 106 crank. A French crank that deserves more praise than it gets. Very light, fantastic finish and classic details. Like it even better than the higher model 107s. The detail I really like on it is the back of the arms are also fluted and finshed as well as the fronts. It's also one of the lightest cranks to come from Stronglight. I posted this older pic (pre-overhaul) of the PSV from two years ago as I have since changed the big ring to what I think are Gipiemmes since. I will change it back to a Stronglight ring as soon as I find a 53T in NOS condition and a good price.:thumb:

Please excuse my poor photo,I had the resolution way down on the camera. My crankset is a 99BIS NM, I found the original dural 52 tooth chainwheel was quite worn,so after a lot of searching found a replacement with the 86mm bcd here in the UK ,but it doesn't look right.

Don't forget "Sheffield" pedals from Italy. Those companies were named when English components were the most desirable.
Later when Italian components became fashionable, companies took on Italian-sounding names; e.g. "Barelli" pedals from England.
