The Smoky Mountain Wheelmen have just opened registration for their 2011 Cherohala Challenge at Active.com (http://www.active.com/cycling/tellico-plains-tn/cherohala-challenge-2011). The event will take place in Tellico Plains, TN on June 18. Pre-registration is $45 before May 1, and $50 from May 1 to June 13. Riders will only get a t-shirt if registration is received by May 31. Day-of registration will be $55, but due to the difficulty involved in getting supplies to the remote course, there will be a limit of 400 riders.
There are two courses in this year's event: a 116-mile Challenge and a 62-mile Metric Challenge. This event is, as the name implies, not suitable for novices or the out-of-shape. The 116-mile course has over 9000 feet of climbing, and the 62-miler has around 6000. Both courses will take riders along the scenic Cherohala Skyway through two National Forests to a maximum elevation of 5300 feet.
You can read about the experiences of riders in both 2008 here (http://harvesttheride.blogspot.com/2008/06/cherohala-challenge.html) and in 2009 here (http://www.indyrootstock.com/v6/includes/2009/06/cherohala-challenge.html), or you can check out the elevation profile for the 116-mile ride here.
