I've just installed some HFX 9 HD's as my first set of disk brakes (finally!). I realize that Hayes typically do not offer the modulation and feel of some other brands, and I can live with that. However, when I pull the lever, they don't engage until they're way too close to the bar...there's probably an inch of free play. I'd like them to hit sooner, and wondered if anyone could offer some tips on optimizing their performance. I tinkered with the set screws, which helped, but not as much as I would like. The brakes came pre-bled...could I rebleed and try and squeeze in more fluid? Shim the pads? Any help is greatly appreciated.
