I love hitting squirrels with snowballs, I'll be sad when all the snow is gone.

I hit a squirrel on my bike once. It ran across the street when I spinning pretty good. Ran under my front tire, it bumped me up a bit, but i kept going. The squirrel did too. So all is well.

I hit a squirrel once as well, ended in my friend going and having to kill it because I didn't want to. I've also hit a cat, but cats should be smart enough not to run in front of bikes...

This thread is ridiculous.

Someone is setting hipster traps in New York (http://gawker.com/#!5781582/someone-is-setting-hipster-traps-in-new-york). A bike chain is bait, so topical.

Ha, that's kind of funny.

I really dislike the term hipster, though, and I can barely bring myself to say the word term aloud. People have commonly told me that I'm a hipster just because I have a few bikes and they happen to be my main mode of transportation, and it infuriates me.

I had a squirrel try to cross in front of me -- he hit my front wheel and was thrown onto my (jeans-wearing) leg where he held on for a second, then dove through the frame to continue in the direction he had been going.

Second such encounter was a pair of squirrels gettin' jiggy several feet off the path, but they panicked as I went by. The female made it past in front of me, the male, not so lucky, didn't survive.

A couple of years ago I was riding home from from work late at night, had forgotten my lights, and hit a possum. I fell and the possum shook itself off and hissed at me. Possum: stronger than slow moving bike.

I once got chased by two raccoons; they were big mothereffers too. It was pretty late at night, and I was riding past some bushes when I heard rustling behind me. I turned around and saw two pairs of beady eyes, flashing in the red glow of my tail light. One of them was loping steadily towards me, so I decided to ride a little faster.

One time I beat a raccoon to death with a flashlight. True story.

It's super scary when you go camping and you look out the door flap in the middle of the night and see a couple pairs of big yellow eyes staring back at you. Raccoons are nuts.

Squirrels are pretty cool at my school. They'll just chill around until you get to like 3" away from them.

One night a skunk played chicken with me while I was riding along at a pretty good pace. I really didn't want to swerve and risk crashing myself because I was carrying a wheel that I had just bought on my back. The thought of wrecking the wheel and possibly impaling myself on it encouraged me to hold my line and hope that the skunk would wuss out before I did. Plus I'm sure it doesn't smell very good after you run over a skunk. It was a big one, too. Thankfully it gave up and scampered across the street when I was about five feet away from killing it. It was definitely a "deer in the headlights" experience. Stupid rodent…

And damn fearless too. I thought that they would want to stay away from big, spinning wheels, but apparently, blinky lights are oh-so-interesting.

I have eaten squirrel - as we used to hunt small game when I was a boy. Squirrel stew is very tasty, really. It's a gamey meat, like rabbit.

My wife ran over a chipmunk on the C&O Canal towpath two years ago. We stopped and I had to put it out of its misery. We never told our daughters, who would have been grief stricken.

A joke: An English monestary decided to open some commercial business to help defray the costs of serving the local community. They considered a bakery, than a restaurant - deciding on a fish'n'chips establishment. A few weeks after opening, the place had become popular, so a news reporter came to investigate for a story. Noticing one priest cleaning the kitchen, the reporter quipped, "you must be the fish friar". "No" came the reply, "I'm the chip monk."

nuhtowel, where were you? Looks kinda like Pond Lab or Davey building area...

The squirrels here are kinda nuts. My English 202 professor was bitten by one when he was feeding it outside Willard a few years ago.

I feed the squirrels and a family of raccoons outside my house all the time. The squirrels will eat out of my hand now but the Raccoons are a little more skittish - although every now and then they hang out on my back porch and wait for a snack.

I made good with the raccoons last year when one of the babies had gotten stuck in one of our trash cans late one night. The poor little guy was screeching like crazy and the mom was frantically trying to get him out while the other kids watched from on top of a wooden fence. I put on the burliest set of gardening gloves I had and a heavy Army coat (just in case - raccoons can be ornery), grabbed a flashlight and went outside. At first the mom stared at me and made a few nasty, threatening sounds but I really think she got the vibe that I was there to help because she eventually hung back and let me reach into the can, lift the baby out and put it right next to her. She cleaned him off and they went on their way. Ever since then, she's been really friendly.
