General Cycling Discussion - Anyone familiar with Orlando FL?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Mrs Nelson and I are going to Orlando FL for vacation in May. I was toying with bringing my cruiser bike or maybe renting a bike while I am there. We are staying in a condo complex just SW of Disney World and I was wondering whether:
a) Whether it is worthwhile bringing the bike at all. What are the cycling facilities like?
b) Whether there any good places to rent a bike that people here have had experience with.
Thanks all
I live north of Orlando. I don't get down to the theme park area much. Locals tend to avoid that area if at all possible. Most of the drivers down there are from out of state and not familiar with the roads so it can get wearing. There are bike trails in Seminole County but that is a ways from the Kissimmee area. There are some good roads to ride on down by Poinciana and Lake Wales. For hills, you could go out to Clermont or ride the West Orange Trail out that way.

Check with Orange Cycle for possible rentals and recommendations about where to ride.

I used to live near Orlando (Winter Park, just on the east side), and I've been down there multiple times for business trips and vacations with the family.
If you're staying in the theme park stretch along I-4 southwest of the city, if you don't have a bike rack on your car or some other way to ferry your bike so you can drive someplace else to bike, enjoy your week without biking. The stretch between the area around Sea World and down to Disney is a zoo full of drivers not familiar with the area.
But if you're driving and have a rack on your car, bring the bike.
Just beware. It will be hot and humid by May.
Ask the folks in the Southeast Regional subforum. Lots of Orlando and central FL folks there.
Orlando has some great paved bike trails.

Also check out The Cycling Hub, in Clermont. They rent nice bikes, real close to west orange trail, and good roads in the area.
