Eastern Canada - Mechanic needed to weld bike frame in Toronto

I've called a few mechanics in my area (yonge and egg) and they all run away once I tell them I need them to weld my bike.

Pretty much the seat pipe broke free at the weld by the pedals. I just need somebody to weld that sucker back in place. My bikes an old cheap raleigh bike, but I need to keep her aliiiive.

Any suggestions? Smaller mechanics in the area? Bike shops that do welding?

So the seat tube broke away from the bottom bracket ?

You could probably find another cheap Raleigh for a fraction of what it will cost to have this repaired.

I was hoping a mechanic could just weld it in an hour. Its just one spot :(
Bikes sentimental and junk, I would like to keep her alive if possible.

If it's an old steel frame, some welding shops might be able to handle it but I'd just call around. My guess is that they won't be able guarantee the job and tell you that if they weld it back it's probably only good as a lawn ornament. It's cheaper to get another bike.

I, personally, would just check Craigslist for another Raleigh/ beater. Its spring soon, so everybody is posting bikes for sale - you'll probably do better in pricing and definitely end up better off. I had a friend who got a frame repaired, broke at the chainstay. After about six months, broke again. I wouldn't trust it on the long term.

it's not that simple. It would need cleaning up first and it would also depend on how corroded the tubing and the bottom bracket is. Steel bike tubing can be pretty thin.

A framebuilder might be able to help you since they already have the right equipment but it will cost you.

I should have also mentioned that what you are looking for is someone to braze the tubing rather then weld it (there is a difference).

I just joined a freecycle community in my area. There's the occasional free bike that comes up. My guess is that in TO you'll have quite a few offered on their freecycle community. Might be worth a try if you're just looking for a beater bike that gets you around.
