Mountain Biking - Panaracer fire fr 2.4 tires.

So im on a cross country tour and i'm taking alot of rail roads, and if anyone here as ridden on the side of the rail road, You know the pebels are killer...

So i was wondering, What Are panaracer fire fr tires designed for, I have a Panaracer fire in front and a WTB velicaraptor 2.0 in the back.

I had these on my bike for a while and they are very grippy at the expense of being slow. If all you are riding are those rocks a 2.4 meaty tire like that isn't necessary. That being said they were great for sloppy conditions but I wouldn't want to ride them cross country by any means.

Funny, Cause in the picture above thats alot smaller then my tire. Mine is 2.4.... And running such a low psi its even wider. But it is a pretty sloppy condition so far. its been pretty good.

Yep. Huge tire, large air volume, slow rolling, fairly light. Makes for a nice front tire, but is sloooooooow in back, and even with the large volume and beefy knobs is prone to pinch flats. It's got a fairly light/thin sidewall for how big a tire it is.

I used and liked it a lot when living in Colorado, not so much out in the east coast. It's a very good tire in the right conditions, but not at all the tire I'd want to be schlepping around on a tour like that.

What are you after with a tire? You want better traction, faster rolling, what?

What he said. I mean, what are you after? Different tire suggestions? It would help to know a bit more about just what exactly you are riding, and what you want your tires to do. Do you care about weight? Price? Better traction on the gravel stuff, or trails, pavement, what?

If you want some help, you gotta' give us some basic data, man.

Honestly I think a Kenda nevel fits most peoples Needs. or the Maxxis Larson TT, or even the Maxxis Aspen.

OK, so you're riding a lot of railbed ballast - - chunky stuff - - but long distances. I think xj is close with his Larsen TT recommend. I'd go for large volume for the cushion but not meaty knobs for the lower rolling resistance. Like maybe a 2.35 or even a 2.5 Kenda Slant Six.
