I seen threads about loading one bike into a utility bike to haul it, but what I have in mind is towing a second bike with my bike. Has anyone seen a device for doing this? I keep thinking an attachment akin to a BOB trailer hitch, but wondering about stability/balance/tracking issues. I've had occasions twice lately where I needed to deliver a bike to a friend and loading them on the trunk rack of my car is a hassle.

I used to have a piece of wood with a bike fork mount (http://yakima.com/shop/bike/truck-bed/blockhead) on it, strap it to the rear rack, mount the other bike and go. The second front wheel would usually get tied to the towed bikes frame.

I've done it before by using the wires on the bottom of a folding basket as a fork mount. I had to do some elaborate bungie-ing to keep the fork held down tightly and to provide lateral stabilization. Worked okay for a 2-3 km trip, but you have to be really careful wrapping the towed bike's fork to prevent paint scratches.
In terms of the handling effects, the towing went pretty smoothly. The quality of the tie-down job is important, especially lateral stability. Overall - works in a pinch, wouldn't want to do it on the regular.

Wahoonc, I like that idea provided I can find one of those mounts. Did you have any issues with tracking or did it follow along pretty well? I'd be riding no more than about 3-4 km.

I was riding with my buddy and he broke his chain (neither of us had a tool or pins) and we passed a bike shop about 2 miles back. I towed him, on the bike. Best method we found was grabbing eachother's shoulders (wearing full lycra kit), it seemed the most stable, and easiest to accelerate (he could still brake obviously). It actually went pretty well, got going at a solid 14mph pace. Only problem was really the redneck in the pickup truck who tried to run us off the road and called us some not so nice things out his window as he passed.

Several companies make the mount. You do have to take it easy, but it tracked very well, just don't want to make any sharp banking turns.

I have a Wike cargo trailer (http://www.wicycle.com/cargo_large_bicycle_trailer.php) and it carries a bike tray perfectly. I regularly use this combination to pick up bikes that I buy.
