I got a helmet Saturday. I walked around the store with the Bell Solar for a while and it was ok. Then I tried on a Trek Sonic and got it almost immediately because of how cool it made my head feel. But I should have worn it longer and asked the salesman more questions because after getting it home and riding for a while I've noticed it doesn't seem to protect my temples too well.

Compared to the Bell it seems to sit on top of my head as opposed to my head sitting within it.

I'm just worried I may not be getting all the crash potential out of it. Other than that feeling of inadequacy it looks well made, good colors (silver/white), decent price and sometimes I'm not sure whether I have taken it off because the fit feels so natural.

I can fit two fingers between the top of my ear lobe and where the outer shell is, but less than one finger where the lobe meets the inner shell thats holds it to your head.

Yes, it sounds like the store ms-advised you. Insist on a refund.

and helmets are tested for impact within an area that starts between 1 to 2 inches above the lowermost portion of the helmet.

Think about how much area of the head that encompasses, how much area of the head that leaves exposed, and the chances an impact will be to the protected area, rather than the unprotected area.
