If you ride in a hilly area then get a triple. 12/27 or 28 rear; 30/42/52 up front. It you're not racing, what difference does the few grams of weight make? NONE!

How is chain line a real consideration on a multi speed bike anyway? If you think about it, having a triple moves your big ring out, which puts it more in line with your small cogs. Right where you need it. The small ring is more in line with your big cogs. again, right where you need it. So it would be an improved chain line over a double, right?

The only benefit would be that with a double crank and matching Bottom Bracket (109.5 or something)you would get more range on the cassette off of your big chainring, since it would be closer in to the seat tube. But then, you loose the small chainring and all those other gears.

But then I'm confused, don't we ride only for status?

I switched to a double when I bought my new bike. I never missed the Granny Gear until I needed it. Then I missed it badly!!
