Foo - I have a question for chipcom.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

You know, I think we all missed the obvious. The answer is 42. The answer is always 42. What the hell have we been on about for the last 50 posts when we all knew all along what the answer was?

It's always the same. Think of the hands as two race cars going around a circular track, each at a constant speed, where one is twelve times faster than the other. It always works out to 1.091 hours ( 1:05:27)
Always the same time between one overlap and the next overlap but if you're looking for the time taken between some arbitrary time and the next overlap that's something else.
So if you want to know, starting from 3:15, how long before the hands overlap it's not 1:05:27, it's going to be very approximately 2 minutes.

If you look at a clock and the time is 3:15, what is the angle between the hour and the minute hands?

I call shenanigans, sir, and demand proof.
This thread is a thinly-veiled Ask Couch Anything thread.
So Couch, was that you I saw around the Flammables locker at my workplace last night?...with some sort of chocolate bevy in one hand and matches in the other?

Is this before or after I 4:20 the afternoon?
.. if you're looking for the time taken between some arbitrary time and the next overlap that's something else.
OK, for that one, take the arbitrary time and express in decimal form. Then subtract it from the multiple of 12/11 that represents the next time the hands cross. So, for 3:15;
3:15 =3.25
Next hands crossing =36/11 = 3.273
Difference = .023 hours = 83 seconds
So how long would the minute hand have to be for the end of it to be traveling 0.5 times the speed of light?
That was one weird movie.

There was me, that is Alex, and my four droogs, that is Pete, Georgie, Dim, and the squirrel, and we sat in the Korova Milkbar trying to make up our rassoodocks what to do with the evening. The Korova milkbar sold milk-plus, milk plus vellocet or synthemesc or drencrom, which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-violence.
Weird is normative in foo.

Honestly, you guys are so far off the mark it's embarrassing to me to watch you shame yourselves.
When the clock reads 3:15 there is NO "angle" between the hands because the hands are parallel to each other. Sheesh.

the poster meant that the hands rotate on a parallel plane and that there is never any angle between them on that plane. thanks for playing. pick up your complimentary bottle of yoohoo from the fridge at Ben's place.

Not the one that says "take it and die!" on it. The other one.

Why hasn't anyone asked "give an example of the time when there is no angle between the 2 hands on the clock?"
What is the sound of a one handed clock clapping in the forest next to a bear and the pope?

It's the same sound as a tree makes when falling when no one is around to hear it.
