Got another email dealing with Highway 39. Guess it's official. Called CalTrans road conditions number and got verification. Ride safe, we now are sharing the road.

San Gabriel Canyon Road (SR-39) Opens to Crystal Lake Road

ASUZA – The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) opened San Gabriel Canyon Road (SR-39) to allow motorists access to Crystal Lake Road (a County of Los Angles road) on Tuesday, March 22 at 6:30 a.m. There is no access to SR-39 beyond Crystal Lake Road. The highway maybe closed occasionally due to inclement weather.

The project to repair storm damaged sections of SR-39 in the Angeles National Forest began May 2010. Two retaining walls were built to help support the highway. This $400,000 contract was awarded to Chumo Construction, Inc. of Baldwin Park, California.

For questions about campgrounds or other destinations in the Angeles National Forest please call 626-574-1613. For questions about Crystal Lake Road, please call the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works at 626-458-5100.

Now I am really glad I made it up last Saturday for one of my most memorable rides up 39. Still a little sad that it is now open.

I think that the road opening is a good thing. An open road will make it less isolated - so I'm now willing to do a solo ride up there. The ability to refill bottles that the snack bar makes it logistically easier. (Drinking from that stream isn't for me.)

I'll probably still drink from that steam - It's not very often you can drink water "straight from the source" like that... I'll probably drink from it until I hear it's no longer safe....

Awesome ride last sunday but a little scary on the bumps in those tight turns towards the top.
