John Bryan Opens First Off-Road Bicycle Trail
Yellow Springs, OH -- Southwestern Ohio mountain bikers will have a new place to ride when John Bryan State Park officials open the park‘s first off-road bicycling trail. At noon on Saturday, April 13, 2002, a ceremony will be held to commemorate the opening of an off-road bicycle trail at the park. The ceremony will be held at the trailhead for the Arboretum Trail near the Day Lodge. The 2-mile dirt trail is the result of a partnership between the state park and local support groups. The trail was designed and built through the efforts of the Wittenberg University Cycling Club, with help from the Ohio Mountain Bike Association. The completed trail is part of a plan that may eventually include a system of multi-use trails totaling five miles in and around the Observatory area. Other trails at John Bryan and at Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve will remain open for hiking only.
Volunteers built the trail using techniques learned from trail building schools held last year presented by the International Mountain Bicycling Association, a non-profit group dedicated to educating riders and trail builders alike. Design of the trail began in the spring of 2000 and work on the trail itself began in September of 2001. After more than 150 hours of volunteer labor, the first completed stage stretches almost two miles and links to the Arboretum Trail. Work on other stages of the trail will likely begin later this year.
Ebay and Clif generously donated work gloves and Clif bars to the workers.
This multi-purpose trail will be available to off-road bicyclers during the park’s regular hours, weather permitting. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset. The trail’s condition will be monitored closely and may be closed temporarily due to wet conditions to protect the resource.
Located just minutes from Dayton, Springfield and Columbus, Ohio John Bryan State Park features some of the most beautiful spots in western Ohio. Among Ohio's 74 state parks, John Bryan is noted for its 10 miles of quality walking trails, for opportunities to view wildlife and for the Little Miami River. The Little Miami, which flows through the state park, is among Ohio's cleanest streams. It is designated as a State and National Scenic River. Amenities at the park include electric and non-electric campsites, picnic shelters, walking trails and a reservable day-use lodge for private gatherings.
