Nope, it didn't really appear until the mountain bike movement got a little traction. I first saw them on the Schwinn Sidewinder mountain bike, from about 1982 or '83.

I put one on an X-GF's bike in college , was done with the college town by 1980,
so that's why I said the 70's

Its Brute force, I had one on a bike with a 14-34t freewheel [a 1x6]till the bike was stolen.
