Ok, I've been wanting a monitor for home use. Thinking something big like 23". I'm using it for photo editing, watching the occasional movie and autocad work which is the big one. Thin is better since I'd like to wall-mount it and I really need image quality.

If it matters, the computer is an ASUS K52J with a Nvidia GeForce 310M graphics card.

Also, I'd like a drawing tablet. Quality is not so important, I'm going to use it mostly for writing equations and what not in the lab when I can't be bothered to pull up an equation generator. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I've had my eyes on a Dell UltraSharp (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824260020) for a while. Comes in 24" if that'll work for you. This is an IPS panel, which is what you want for photo editing. TN panels are much cheaper but they're terrible when it comes to viewing angle. That means that if your viewing angle is ever so slightly off from ideal, you're not getting a correct color representation.

Recommended by a guy on another forum who does film color work for a living, btw. Under $1,000 this is probably your best bet. Says it's better than his Apple Cinema display which cost twice as much.

Also, think about renting a colorimeter from the local photo place to calibrate it.

Can't really help on the tablet side.

Thanks for the input. Do you think I could wall-mount that? My desk is in a corner, so I'm planning on either using a triangle type TV mount or mounting it to my wall. I'd rather keep my whiteboard though so the corner mount would be better.

Also, any idea if I can shut my laptop screen off while the big monitor is connected? I'm still getting used to this thing.

Fn + F3, F4, F5, F8, or F9. This means if you were for example to press and hold Fn + F3 at the same time it'd switch between your laptop display to your external display. The function key will often be labeled as CRT/LCD or have a picture of a monitor on the key or close to the key.

Thanks a lot, that's a big help.

Looks like f8 for me. As for tablets it looks like this Wamco Bamboo will do just fine for me so I'm going to go buy my own tomorrow. Borrowing my sister's right now.
