I replaced my brake cable and housings over the weekend - these are Chorus 10 spd brake levers. I couldn't get the "old" ferrules out of the brake lever assembly. I didn't have any qualms about reusing them, but I found that it was hard to get the new cable through the housing and ferrule once the factory end had been cut off (I had to pull the new cable out once after I shortened it at the brake end and wound up using a new cable since I couldn't get the cut end through the brake lever body).
I am using a Park cable tool and it cuts the cable effortlessly and leaves a very clean end, just not clear enough. These are SS cables so solder is out.
Any thoughts on how best to get the ferrule out of there? Maybe a magnet?
Try pushing a spoke up instead of the cable and see of you can nudge it out. You might have to curve the end of the spoke trial and error until you succeed.
Come to think of it, you can prolly just stick the spoke in where the housing goes, and use the thread in the ferrule's hole.
If it's a metal ferrule, see if you can grab it with a pair of needle nose pliers and pull it out.

I spoke with the LBS today. He said he doesn't know why daVinci puts the ferrules on that end of the cable housing - they are neither necessary nor recommended. In any event I have a shift issues obviously not related to the brake cable so the LBS will get the ferrule out. It does sound like the threaded end of the spoke would work well, however.
