Southeast - Assault on the Carolinas

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Anyone doing this years? Friend of mine and I are signing up for the 100k. I've never done a climb like Caesars Head, have a feeling it's gonna be a doozie

I'll be there. Its a good event with a beautiful route. The climb up Caesars Head will be memorable. Find a rhythm you can maintain and stick to it. Don't push yourself, especially at the beginning. You do get a slight break just over 3 miles up as the grade calms down for about a half mile. Of course then it makes up for it ;).
Oh the plan is to take it easy for 40 miles b/c I know the climb is going to be a leg killer. Still sounds like fun though and been meaning to hit some of the gaps in N GA and SC etc for some climbing work
Sounds like you have the right idea. Let me know if you are staying over Saturday. I will be riding another route that includes some Parkway mileage with a friend on Sunday morning. You're welcome to join us. We will be riding for pleasure, not performance. Its an equally beautiful route - and has its share of climbing.

Wish I could do this as prep for Mt. Mitchell. I'm stuck in Arizona until the week before though!
Thanks for the heads-up on the ride. Ill be signing up to do the 100k ride. Looks like fun!

Naah, we're heading back to Atlanta saturday after the ride. Appreciate the invite though
That was a fun ride. and although tough, Caesars Head was fun also and quite the challenge. My legs felt fine, my lungs gave out
Here's my garmin data

Good job opie. It was a nice event and the turn out was bigger than I've seen in the past. My only compliant in an otherwise very well executed event is that we were limited to one hamburger. Usually these events provide plenty of food. By the time I drove 12 miles back to Hendersonville, I was starving again.

Opie: Thanks for posting the data. I did the ride and dont have this kind of garmin so I was interested in elevation gain etc. I did notice that your gchart says you burned 7k calories?! There is no way you burned that in 4.5 hours.... I would expect 3-4k calories max. It was nice how the temp dropped during the climb up Ceasers - that helped a great deal.
The line was so long for the hamburger, I gave up and drank a $3 pilsner for lunch. Surprisingly, I wasnt affected by the alcohol.
Driving back to Greenville there was a bad motorcycle accident on 276. The road was blocked - I sure hope the guy was wearing a helmet and hes alright.
I didn't get anything to eat afterwards. Got a glass of sweat tea and poured most of it out b/c it was horrible. Didn't want to chance it with anything else. Stopped in Lavonia, GA for grub on the way home.
Ya, the garmin overestimates the calories. I always chuckle at that although I have read some articles on how those calculations are made. interesting stuff (http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2010/11/how-calorie-measurement-works-on-garmin.html)
I recorded 2770 calories as measured by a Power Tap wheel and corrected by the generally accepted 1.2 factor (1.2 X kj = calories) which accounts for our bio efficiency. I am 180 lbs. I doubt any currently available method will more accurate in computing actual calorimetric data than a calibrated power meter like the PT, Quarq, SRM, etc.
Even without a power meter, the newer Garmin 500 and 800 will produce significantly more accurate data than the earlier models (and runner models) for the reasons given in that link.
