Bicycle Mechanics - Soaks, Lubes, Degreasers, Greases?

Does anyone have any tips on cheap sources for degreaser, new grease, etc? Or ways to make your own concoctions that get the job done? I would really like to get a good soak for old, grimy dusty parts (brakes, derailers, shifters) that make them new and shiny again.

I know certain things at automotive stores are cheap and good, but not sure which ones?

Dawn is a very good degreaser. You can find receipes here for chain lube. Any good automotive grease is better than our needs.

Maybe READ just a little bit of the forum first.

The best grease I have come across is Krazy Grease. I use it to pack my boat trailer bearings. It's waterproof so I've only had to pack them once in three years. It packs good, not like other grease that washes out. I'ved use it on my bike bearings and for a million around the house applications. I bought mine at a local marine shop but I think you can buy it online. One jar will last you forever. www.krazygrease.com

If you need to use anything other than lots of soft dry rags and elbow grease you are putting too much lube on your bike. Well, maybe an old toothbrush with Dawn in water for the really muddy bits. A possible exception is chains but I don't want to start another 6-page thread on chain care.

I am mostly talking about refurbishing old components for/from flipping, so a good soak solution would be ideal for getting things clean without tons of time spent.

Castol Super Clean will take off bad stuff.Be careful,it will etch things if you use it full strenght.I like Mobil 1 grease.
