Bicycle Mechanics - Triple STI shifter with double crank?????

over the years ive never really gotten a definitive answer on this....can you easily use a triple shimano shifter with a double shimano crankset?
Sure. Assuming we`re talking about fromt derailleurs and double and triple cranksets. Setting the upper limit screw will restrict travel of the derailleur and prevent the shifter from reaching the third indexing position. In some cases that might take a slightly longer limit screw, but thats preferable to loading the derailleur with excessive slack in the lower position.

The 5600 front sti lever is intended for use on a double or triple. Be careful to fully lock out the third position with the limit screw, and check your cable tension periodically so that you never unintentionally hit that third position.

I have a SRAM Elita Triple Crankset, with 6703 Derailleurs and Shifters. I'm curious towards getting a double crankset (don't ask me why), but I'm having trouble believing that the shifters wouldn't function properly given a new double front derailleur and possibly replacing the long-cage in the back. Does anyone think there's a possibility it could be made to work? Because Shimano has all of a sudden listed these brifters as not compatible as opposed to the previous years... Thanks for any insight.
Shimano now offers a double version of the 105 10-speed front shifter because there have been numerous problems with using the triple version on a double. These problems have been having the shifter lock in the big ring position.
There have been many posts at this forum about the problem. Shimano has replaced some of the shifters with the newer "Double" version. The 9-speed shifters are not known to have this problem.
I have not heard of any problems specifically with the Ultegra 10-speed triple shifters used on a double.
Most Shimano road triple shifters have 4 main positions for the 3 chainrings with an additional trim position for the smallest ring. Some people have reported setting up the triple shifters to use the 2nd 3rd and 4th positions for use with a double instead of the standard setup with the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. This makes the position for the big ring the same for the double as the triple.
