Singlespeed & Fixed Gear - what needed to make a fixie?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Dude hit the search button, its been covered a million times. I mean really, I'm not trying to be rude by any means. But do some searching.

That is a great place to start too.

To make this Schwinn frame a fixie you 'll need the following:
-1 front wheel
-1 rear wheel with either a track hub or a thread on freewheel hub
-a track cog and track lock ring (if youhave a track specific hub)
or a track cog and BB lockring and some loctite (if you have a thread on
freewheel hub)
-1 chain
-1 chainring
-cranks (length depends on you, but 165mm is good, perhaps even 170s)
-bottom bracket
-either a pair of clipless pedals or a pair of clips & straps and platform pedals
-handlebars (depends on what you want)
-fork
-headset
-stem
-seat
-seatpost
-front brake (optional)
-messenger/posenger bag with a stash pocket (you must also post a pic of the stash
pocket once you find it)
-some pie (not cake, but pie)
-an old Krytponite lock that you can pick with a Bic pen barrel so you can show off
to your friends
After you have collect all of the above, only then will you really be fixed.
And thus the need for a FAQ is sorely needed yet again. Mods, let's work together on this!

Direct it to lotek, current reigning king of the mods (no offense to joe).

We could model it after the MTBR.com SS FAQ (http://www.mtbr.com/faq/ssfaq.shtml).
When making the SS FAQ we all posted our input and stuff we thought would be appropriate in a thread and then a volunteer did all the work to create the FAQ, using all our gathered info. Took a good couple of weeks (or was that months) th get it up and running! I think we're in the process of updating it now too.

sorry, didn't mean to come across as a noob, but i was in a bit of a hurry earlier, normally i'm pretty good about searching first

It's needed though - we get a lot of newbie questions and a reference would be good. I proposed it half-heartedly a few months back but I think we really do need one now.

Yeah, we definitely need something to point people to, other than Sheldon Brown. I'm sure everyone here will have some input as to what the FAQ should look like. I'd volunteer to create it but I'm a noob and an imbecile when it comes to HTML and web-based stuff. I'm sure we could find someone with HTML experience...

Hey if you guys want to put it together, I'll build the site for it. How bout 'fixedfaq.com'?
Oh wait, I just remembered. I work 50+hrs/week. If someone wants to build the faq and oversee it, I'll host it and buy the domain but otherwise I'm out of time

I asked Joe G. and never received a final decision. I think ours is the red-headed stepchild. So be it. And yet, we probably generated the second largest amount of traffic on the site (bic anyone?). WHERE'S THE LOVE?

Let's do it! I've started building how-to pages from my fixie build up. I've got what I feel is a nice tutorial with pictures on building wheels with fixed gear hubs and a nice tutorial on removing, filing, and painting braze ons/bosses. I have other things in the works, but these two things are done.
I think it would be ideal if we could have a FAQ that heavily uses visuals. (That's what I've been doing in my aforementioned tutorials.)
I think we should register a domain, find a host, and provide all content with a public license (so there will not be any ownership issues). After the site is built, we can turn the passwords over to one of the mods here and they can be sure it stays secure.
Sound good? Maybe we should start a new thread with this specific topic.

Oh yeah, I can help with content and the technical issues. I am very familiar with DNS/domain name issues and web server issues. I am also a fairly competent program. My problem is design. I can see a design and say "that looks good" or "good design, but there are a few usability issues" but I absolutely suck and coming up with a design.

Well I work at a web hosting company and can get it free hosting at least to start, so no biggy there. I can only do a few GB/mo of transfer though. New thread indeed. Someone start it, I'll pitch in where needed.

absntr and fugazi are excellent designers from what i've seen. I love both their websites. They'd be good for input on that.
I think we need a FAQ on riding drunk... Where is that sub-forum?
Is it this one?

Dude its like that's all you talk about. You need help or something.
Yeah, probably. I'm broke. Want to buy me more whiskey? This bottle might last until friday... :)
For what it's worth, I do talk about other stuff... Like the evils of brakes. And locktite on cogs... And how cheesecake is better than pie...
I talk about more if you click on my sig...

I'll be happy to contribute on content if needed. I really think this is a good idea. This forum has been a great resource for me and I'd love to give a little back. Let me know what I can do.

I started a thread on it, "Fixed + SS FAQ" so lets move the discussion there. What I'm willing to commit to at this point is hosting the domain and arranging content. If someone has something to contribute, they can submit it to me (if this moves forward) and I'll make a page with the content and post a link to it on the main page of the site. I would have to wait a couple of weeks before I could get started tho, for my day job to slow down a little bit.
Quit your day job. This is more important!
