Foo - I can't even post what I want to.

I got a phone call last night. After turning down the parks job in favor of the bike shop job, the bike shop decided to let me go. I apparently adjusted a brake incorrectly and the owner of the bike came back last night after I left. He was pretty irate. The brake failed and he went down hard.

They said that while they know mistakes happen, they're a small shop and just can't handle these kinds of mistakes.

Do I call the parks office back and try to get that job or what?

Sorry to hear that UA. Did they say what specifically was wrong? If it was your mistake that caused the person's fall then you'd know and wouldn't repeat it.

Couldn't hurt to at least see if the other position has been filled.

Sometimes life sucks. Get back on that horse and make the phone call. Yes it will be a difficult call to make, but it's better than the alternative ... not having a job.

Did the shop train you at all? Where you supervised at all, as in was someone more senior checking your work due to your limiited experience? Did you ride the bike before it went out the door? Did anyone?

Mistakes happen, I bet there is not a wrench in that shop who has not made a mistake. Sadly, you are the newest guy with little margin, etc. and you were let go. And this is the guy that was supposed to be your friend, etc? Wow.

That's exactly what I was thinking. In a properly supervised shop this should not have happened. You have to mentor and supervise employees, not throw them under the bus.

+ 10. Hopefully you were able to resign from the bike shop as opposed to being fired. If I was in your shoes, I would tender an actual letter of resignation and send it to the bike shop. This would avoid you having to disclose that you were 'fired' to future employers.
