Nothing makes me think industry in America like baseball
we have one of the last real grass and dirt fields in America here
I never knew what a privilege it was to grow up with a dirty white
uniform until I grew up.
MacFred, I'm loving the aged effects you have been using of late.

I have to say ... baseball has never been the first thing to leap to mind when I think of industry. What's the connection?

Machka - there IS a correlation between the organization of sports and the industrial revolution - think transportation, leisure time, company sponsorship, worker entertainment, growth of cities due to mechanization...

Interesting. Maybe because I've never been involved in work-related sporting activities, I didn't make the immediate connection between industry and sport ... except for the industry of manufacturing sporting equipment.

Look at the signs in the outfield, they come from a time when Birmingham had very active steel mills, and the trains were a lot more active. That's part of the correlation. Birmingham is like Pittsburgh. There are few places in the country that have everything you need to make steel in one place. Like you can count them on one hand hand. So that caused lots of growth during the industrial era.
I got to watch michael jordan play baseball very porely and train here for bit. But it doesnt matter, he is michael jordan.198118

I live in a rural farming community, so this is it for an industrial revolution.

To follow on the baseball theme, I almost went with the shot of Boston's Citgo sign over the Charles, but felt more like this rusting gear from Seattle's underground:

I like that one ... I have several shots that are along those lines (click my photo in Post #21 for some of them ... my photos link to the set where I've got more).
When I chose the theme "Industrial Revolution" I thought people might play with the the idea of an industrial/mechanical shot, with something that suggests revolution ... like your wheel. :) In my shot, the suggestion of revolution are the rivets and pipe opening, but I debated about using shot with a wheel, like yours.

Thanks, I have a thing for gears (and decay). I like your wheels too. I think the decrepit gear is trying to say something about the state of the promise of the revolution, but I'm not sure exactly where I'm going with that.
A set of photos (not mine) I really love is here:
http://www.jamesgriffioen.net/
particularly this shot:
http://www.jamesgriffioen.net/index.php?/projects/the-tree/
Overall, it's a set of images of Detroit (as the largest city - well used to be anyway - of the city where I grew up, it's close to my heart) as it's falling apart and being reclaimed by nature. The shot I linked to second is in the public schools' book depository where they store books that they're not using, but the building fell into disrepair and the books all moldered and now there's a tree growing out of these old schoolbooks inside the building.

You might want to check out Edward Burtynksy's "industrial" shots - the "shipbreaking" ones under "ships" and a lot of the "China" shots are amazing. The photos themselves are huge - impressive to see in an exibition.
