Mountain Biking - What type of tires should i use?

Okay well it came to me that i have knobby tires and maybe that isnt the best for what i do. I have a HT bike with 26" tire. And the thing is i do a lot of everything, I ride to and from school and thats 8 miles/day plus anywhere else i want to go. And then usually on weekends I go on the trail and about once a month i go on some jumps. But i know knobbies are not the best for road travel so i hear, so what tire should i use?

well i have maxxis dynomite and ignitor tyres and i ride eveywhere. they are really really grippy on rough surfaces and not bad for road. but i have worn them daown a far bit. so i think these are a really good set.

i think maxxis high roller are the best i ride downhill jumps skate park road and they have bearly worn down they are really grippy and i normally ride with roughrider on the weekends and he says there good

I'm actually running Ritchey Speedmax 2.0 Pro's on my HT, but I haven't had the opportunity to take it offroad yet. From what I hear, they're fine for hardpack but don't expect much grip in the slick stuff. They're knobby on the sides and semi-slick in the center. On pavement, they do roll pretty well. I've also run Continental Town & Country on a previous bike, but they're almost worthless even in hardpack conditions.

i recommend some tioga extreme cross country tires, $30 aus, they are good for everything,from wet concrete to loose terrain, its all good

do a search in the forums. There have been so many about tires ect, you'll find lots of info there.

Best tyres I've ever had were Hutchinson Pythons. They wear well on the road too.

If you ever find a tyre that is as good offroad as on, make sure you post it.

despite what everyone says....I like the fact I have knobbies and I don't have an issue riding on the road w/ them, I also like being able to ride off into the dirt or mud and not worry about spinning. Last night cryogenic tried to make it up a grass hill and his tire finally spun as he approached the top...he has the hybrid? guess? flat in the center, knobbies on the edges.

Ritchey Speedmax 2.0 Pro... no tread in the center, knobbies on the sides. It was wet and not having any tread to grip made it nearly impossible to get it up that steep of a hill while standing up on the pedals. If it was dry, I would have been fine. They're definitely not off-road wet friendly. Dry hardpack, they'd do fine.

Well, ive got Specialized Enduro Tyres they came stock on my Hardrock about a year and 4 months ago, and hardly any ware, and i do everything with it, ride to and fro school everyday (6 miles) i ride trails everyday, and i dj most days. My tyres are still fine, and their not very expensive

haha...totally off subject, but I had to point it out. I've managed to lock up my tires twice :-x these hayes have some stopping power.

I think the Enduros is what my bike would have come with but I had my LBS swap them out with the Ritcheys when I bought it. I have no idea how they would compare to the tires I'm running now.

I hear anything knobby and 2.1 is good. Not too thick so that you can move easily on pavement and not too thin so you can track down on dirt.

Not sure if you got new tires yet or not, but I have the Maxxis HolyRollers, and they seem to work pretty well, they roll really smooth, and seem to work good so far on hardpack and roads. I also have the Kenda K-rad's on my other bike, and they work pretty well also, rides very smooth on the road. Only downfall for these onroad would be weight/ size I guess. Holy Rollers = 2.5", and K-rad's = 2.3

I like to have 2 set of wheels. One for roads and paths and one for trail riding.
