Recreational & Family - The longest ride so far for this newbie...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I was pretty happy today- got on the TREK Navigator and rode it to the town I work in which is 15 miles one way. The hardest part was getting up the nerve to get out on a major highway and actually having to trust the drivers not to run me down. Then, I had to brave all the dogs that gave chase in the residential neighborhoods- but even pointing pepper spray at them kept them at bay.

I got there, met up with a couple of friends and took about a 35 minute break. I chose a different route on the way home that added a couple of more miles, but no dogs. I'll go that route from here on out. Total miles today was 32!

A little background- 7 months ago I was 288 pounds and never rode a bike more than 2-3 miles. I'm now 198 and lost a lot of my weight by riding a stationary bike as my main form of exercise. Next weekend, I am signed up for a local fund raising ride for the YMCA. I chose the easiest ride when I signed up (12 miles) but may ask to change it to the 25 mile ride now. We'll see how sore I am tomorrow!

I was pretty darn happy today, so I snapped this pic when I got there:

Hope everyone here has a great weekend! Thanks for this site and letting us newbies talk shop with like minded folks. :thumb:

Great post - very inspirational. After awhile 30 miles starts to seem like a fairly short ride. Keep riding. Make it a lifetime passion, rather than one that burns bright for awhile then fades away. One of these days you may be ready to try a century. They're not impossible (although I admit, I always suffer. The amount of suffering depends on how much riding I've been able to do beforehand.)

Keep going! Good job!
