I know many on this forum have done the ride from the SF Bay Peninsula up to Alice's Restaurant in Woodside via Old La Honda Rd.
I've also read that it can be quite dangerous, with hairpin turns on a narrow road, where local cars can appear with little warning and even worse, speeding bike riders on the wrong side of the road. Please share your advice on riding safe on this route.
Thanks

Keep well to the right and you should be fine.

I've biked this road hundreds of times. Never had any kind of problem. Just stay to the right. Brightly colored clothing and front and rear lights can make you more visible on shady roads.

I never ride downhill on Old La Honda. Page Mill Road is much more fun.

I've ridden up it 22 times in the last eight months and have yet to die.

Going down OLH does suck though. 84, Kings and Page Mill (in that order, IMO) are better descents.

+1 what everybody else says. Honestly I worry more about being on Skyline than I ever do going up OLH. I say this is a long time motorcyclist, but summer brings out the squids and when the Spring Sun first starts to appear I pretty much avoid Skyline on a bike or moto, unless it's early in the day.

Going up OLH is totally safe. Riding on Skyline is generally very safe if you stay to the right and just expect the traffic. The motorcycles/auto clubs can be loud, but there's generally plenty of space. You can descend OLH if you really want, but it is technical and you need to go slow through all of the blind corners. Not fun, but doable. Most people descend 35 to 84 and then 84 down as it's quicker and easier.

Stay to the right on OLH to avoid riders who are descending. I have had a few run-ins with irate local car drivers but none have hit me. Most are resigned to their road being semi-impassible on nice weekend mornings.

I think that Kings is a better climb.

I think that Kings is a better climb.Plus, if you head south to Skylonda you get the fun descent from Skeggs! :)

Wait from where?

From the top of Kings, going south. After Bear Gulch rd just south of Skeggs it's downhill to Alice's and twisty enough to be fun.
