Just wanted to vent. She spent 30mins on the phone telling me about how the last prophecy of some nun was just revealed by the pope. I remember before the year 2000, she was telling me this as well.

She's a devout Catholic and believes all these prophecies. Was not gonna even try to convince her otherwise, she'll think I'm possessed etc. :(

Anyway, anyone has someone like that in the family? How do you deal with it?

Tell her to live each day like it was the last, doing all things in love, not legalistically. The end will come in His time, not ours. Proverbs 3:5-6.

Nonserious: Make your own prophecies! I find ones about spaghetti are readily accepted.
Serious: Do what jsharr said, the only thing she'll listen to is the Pope or the Bible.

Don't Catholics also believe in the Bible? Mark 13:32 is pretty straightforward.

I guess she doing that, and telling me about is her way of "caring" for me, but when I think about the way she sees things, I get down.. I can't fix it, its like seeing some suffer psychologically.

You mean “But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father."?

I'm not sure, I think Presbyterians are the ones who take the bible literally. I think my mom is more pick and choose... BLEH!!!

Listen, nod your head, go about your day. If she is asking you to sell possessions, drink kool-aid, etc., well then it's time for action. But until then, it's no different than a differing political viewpoint from yours.

I have a sister who is a truther, birther, "we have a pile of combined us-mexican money called Ameros hidden in Montana"-er, etc, etc, etc. You name it, if it has a sliver of conspiracy involved, I get an email about it from her. Makes for tough family get-togethers, as nothing is safe to talk about. But, she's my sister, so I love her dearly and keep an eye on her to make sure things aren't spiraling out of control.

I do enjoy listening to a little Coast to Coast AM once in a while... but it isn't exactly reality.

There's a lot of prophecies out there and they're all wrong, but one day one of them will be correct. I tend to think the end of mankind will come from an asteroid or possibly a supervolcano, but no one knows...

Our only hope -- and it's a very small hope -- is through science and technology, but we're too busy with crazy talk from all sides.

The joke's going to be on all you jokers when his Ma is proven right in 2012 when .22 ammo replaces gold as the worldwide unit of currency.
Did you know that a 30-lb bag of dry dog food can sustain a survival-minded individual for nearly a year?

uh, seriously about the medications - it seems that these days people go to the heart doc, the bone doc, the internist, the this doctor & the that doctor, and all these docs prescibe meds, not necessarily knowing what the other docs have her taking. Sometimes all these meds make folks a bit... loopy? My mom-in-law was getting positively wacko, and my sister-in-law dragged her to a gerontolgist GP type with all her meds in tow... turned out that a few of them were duplicates, and some of them contradicted each other. Once this doc got all the other docs on the same page, the meds were adjusted & she's back to her normal self.

OP, tell her to only worry when the Jews start worrying. With 3,000+ years experience than the Pope on prophesies, we know the wheat from the chaff. ;)

Tell them they have 30 seconds to change the subject or I'm calling the men with the special white jacket.

Or just hang up on them (if on the phone). Or just leave (if at their house). Or tell them to leave (if they're at my house).
