General Cycling Discussion - Does anyone use their bike for hunting?

I found out about some BLM land that may have wild pig. But it's not accessable by motor vehicle.
The area where the game may be would not be a bad hike but making it back with a 150lb pig would be quite the chore. I was thinking to hook up a trailer to Mr. Rockhopper and giving it a go.

Anyway, I've hunted the middle Tennessee area for a number of years. Somewhat hilly with a lot of soft ground, mud sometimes, downed tree wood. It can be difficult walking especially as you try and drag 150-200 lbs of dead weight. We ended up purchasing a wheeled game carrier from Cabela's. It works very well. The reason I suggest this is it is inexpensive, simple, and fairley cheep ($140 approx). If your area is flat with relatively hard or packed ground, the bike / trailer might work.

I'm with Don here. I use my MTB bike for scouting the trails near me, but off road riding and trying to pull a heavy trailer sounds like a disaster. Thats said without knowing your terrain. The game carrier is a good option unless you have heavy timber (like me) it's easier to pack game out then.

Most bike trailers I know of will carry 70 to 100 ibs., not the 150-200 you'd need for a feral pig.

I see plenty of fishermen with bikes but no hunters.

On a rare occasion I fish using my bike...that's a form of hunting!

That picture is of a guy from Iron Mountain, Michigan! My uncle lived there until he passed away in the late 80's; people up there are... *interesting*!

you could always make your own. you can get a welder at walmart for like $150. then go buy some steel tubing and some wheels at harbor freight...


also there are bike trailers that are designed for lot's of weight... what was the web site.

Off topic - with my apologies.

It should be noted that I’m very “pro-cop” on 95% of their issues. But it pisses me off to no end every time I see the Association of Chiefs of Police get up behind some gun-grabbing politicians and propose disarming their clients. Which they do frequently. For some reason I tend to give great thought to ways I can affirm my constitutional rights in a non-violent way and pass a message to those in power.

Somewhat back on topic -Lately, I've wondered what would happen if I cycled through town and into the woods to the gun range 5 miles south of town with my SKS (that’s a rifle) on my back. I think the cops would get a lot of calls and stop me no matter how friendly I waved at their cruiser. Even with showing them my bolt carrier in one pannier and the ammo in another (thus proving I’m not cycling through town with a loaded rifle) I'm sure some police officer would have a cow. My guess is my constitutional right to keep and bear arms is O'Key-doke if I'm in a SUV.

But when a rifle is in clear view on a cyclist (We are all subversives you know!) my guess it the police would "find" a variety of "reasons" to discontinue my journey. Anyone else ever try this form of constitutional expression? Am I wrong. Will the cops pat me on the back and encourage my exercise in constitutional expression and afirmation of my part in the "well regulated militia?" We have police officers on this board. Do any of you wish to comment? I've rubbed shoulders professionally with enough cops to know there is the "for public consumption" position and the real and likley actions of the officer on the scene. I'd like to know what you think would really happen because I’m seriously considering it because I need the exercise, and I love to shoot.

BTW - I get enough strange looks now going to the range with a Volvo sedan. I wonder what the redneckers at the range with their Toby Keith Edition F-1250’s would think if I cycled up on a touring rig and proceeded to shoot just as well as the best among them? Think they’d pass cyclists with their road hogs quite as closely after that?
